Chapter 140-1
Claim
The dim violet light in the bedroom gradually gives way to the deep, heavy dark of full night, the distant hum of the city fading into a quiet background pulse.
The air between us is still thick with the residual heat of earlier, but the gentle rhythm of Locke’s breathing against my hair has shifted. There’s a subtle tension returning to his frame, a stiffness in the muscle that hasn’t completely dissolved.
I shift slightly, propping my chin on his broad, warm chest. He looks down at me, his eyes shadowed in the faint glow of the moon filtering through the floor-to-ceiling glass.
“Locke?” I say softly.
“Yeah, baby?”
“When you came home earlier…” I hesitate. “Aside from the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed helping you work off all that pent-up frustration against the wall…”
Locke’s mouth twitches, but the shadow behind his eyes doesn’t fully clear. “Yes, I should thank you for that, by the way. You did an awesome job.”
“Why were you so stressed? What happened at the clubhouse today?” I pause, catching his guarded look, and hasten to add, “If it’s club business and you can’t tell me, it’s okay. I understand.”
Locke lets out a long, heavy sigh that expands his chest beneath me. He reaches up, running his fingers through his hair, staring up at the ceiling for a long moment before his hand settles back onto the small of my back, holding me close.
“No, it’s okay,” he says. “You deserve to know what’s going on. There’s a massive argument tearing through the table right now, about whether we should intercept a third chemical shipment.”
Cold settles in my stomach. I look at him, my pulse picking up its pace, the sheer danger of it washing over me. “A third shipment?”
“Yeah.”
“Locke… Knox has no idea who took the first two trucks. But if anyone pushes it too far… if another hit goes wrong…”
I swallow hard.
“Look at Bishop,” I say. “He’s still lying in bed, barely able to take ten steps across the room without the pain folding him in half. Stitch said that he won’t lose his leg, but the nerve damage might be permanent. How can anyone look at what happened to him and want to risk it again?”
Locke’s face turns to carved stone, his eyes fixed on mine. “It’s worse than that, Zara.”
I hold my breath, every nerve ending in my body standing on end. “Worse? Worse how?”
“Sebastian Vane is stepping into the center of it,” Locke says. “Word came through our channels that if there’s another chemical truck arriving, Vane is overseeing the distribution personally. He’s putting his own crew on the route.”

Chapter 140.
Cham
A shudder runs through me, cold and visceral. I don’t know much about Vane, but I know he’s one of the biggest, most dangerous drug operators in the region, a man who operates in ruthless shadows and Teaves absolute ruin in his wake.
The thought of my Dad, my brother, Locke, and the rest of my family stepping into the crosshairs of a man like Vane makes my throat go dry.
“What do you want to do?” I ask.
Locke turns his head, staring out the high windows at the sprawling, distant lights of the city. His hand on my back presses firmly, grounding me against him.
“In my opinion?” he says softly, looking back at me with unwavering honesty. “The third truck isn’t worth the risk, not by a long shot. Intercepting those first two chemical loads crippled Knox’s supply line and did more than enough damage without blowing our cover. Going back for a third is playing with fire. The risk to reward ratio is completely fucked.”
A tiny wave of relief washes over me hearing him say it, but the heavy atmosphere in the room remains
unbroken.
“So…” I hesitate, my voice tight. “Who’s pushing for it? The third heist?”
Locke lets out a rough breath, his jaw tightening. “Your brother.”
“Mayhem?” I ask softly. “Really?”
“You know how Mayhem is, Zara. He’s not doing this to be reckless or cruel, but he believes in strike-first, hit-hard tactics. He thinks leaving a third shipment alone leaves money and leverage on the table, and he’s convinced the club needs to seize every advantage while Knox is still blind to who’s hitting him. Half the younger guys are backing him up, too.”
