Chapter 26-2
“Don’t, Zara,” he snarts.
I meet his gaze. “Don’t what?”
“Don’t talk about things you don’t fucking understand.”
“Now you don’t, Knox.”
“Don’t what?” he echoes.
“Don’t tell me what the fuck to do.”
That’s when his massive hand shoots out and closes around my arm hard enough to hurt. “Listen to me,
arm you stupid bitch.”
I jerk back. “Let me go!”
Instead, he shoves me against the brick wall beside the entrance, the impact knocking the air from my lungs as pain tears hot and sharp through my healing side. For a second, I can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t
move.
Knox leans in, his grip bruising my flesh, his face close enough that I can see how little self-control he has left.
“You’re going to stop fucking around,” he hisses. “You’re going to let things carry on exactly the way they were, and you’re going to remember that your name is still attached to enough paper to ruin you if I decide to let it.”
And he makes a fist and punches me in the face, hard enough that I literally see stars.
Fear hits then, real fear… because the life I thought that I’d carved out away from him suddenly feels thin as glass. But fear isn’t the only thing left in me anymore, and I let my rage fuel me as I bring my knee up hard. Smack in his pathetic, cheating d**k.
Knox crumples with a strangled curse, his grip breaking just enough for me to twist free. I run, even though every step hurts. I race up the stairs, because I can still hear Knox shouting behind me, because terror has become a living thing beneath my skin and all I can think is up, door, lock, safety.
By the second floor, my side feels like it’s being torn open from the inside. By the third, my vision blurs. By the time I reach my door, my hands are shaking so badly I drop my keys once, then nearly sob from frustration before forcing them into the lock.
Inside. Door shut. Deadbolt. Chain. Another lock.
Then I back away until I hit the table under my beautiful window. For a moment, there’s only the sound of my breathing. Too fast, too loud, too broken.
My side throbs beneath my hand, deep and sickening, but worse than the pain is the image of Knox standing outside my building like he belongs here. Like nowhere I go will ever be free of him.
My phone is out of my bag and in my hand before I fully decide to reach for it. Locke answers on the first

ring.
“Zara?”

I close my eyes, and something inside me cracks just slightly at hearing my name said in that rough voice. “He’s here.”
Silence. Dangerous. Loaded. Furious.
“Are you inside?”
“Yes.”
“Door locked?”
“Yes.”
“Chain?”
“Yes.”
“Are you hurt?”
I press a shaking hand harder against my side, gingerly touch my cheekbone where his punch landed. “Not badly.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
My throat tightens. “He hit me.”
Another silence, colder this time.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know. Outside. Maybe gone. I don’t know.”
“Stay away from the windows.”
I move instantly. “Locke -”
“I’m coming, Zara.”
And then he hangs up.
I stand there with the phone still pressed to my ear, listening to the dead line while my whole body trembles from the inside out.
I don’t know how long I wait. Minutes. Hours. Maybe only seconds stretched thin by fear.
I sit on the kitchen floor with my back against the cabinets because standing hurts too much. My knees are drawn carefully toward my chest, one hand holding a package of frozen peas to my cheek, the other wrapped around my phone like it’s the only solid thing left in the room.
Then there’s a knock, and I startle to attention. I force myself up, every movement pulling pain through my body, and look through the peephole.
