Locke, I just mean you need rest

“I don’t give a damn about rest, Zara,” he growls. “My place is right here. Right beside you. You don’t take bad news alone, and you don’t wait forgood news alone. Period. Stop asking me to leave. It’s not fucking happening.”

“You’re exhausting.”

“You’re exhausting,” he counters smartly. “Go home and take a nap’… Jesus fuck, Zara. As if.”

The door clicks open, breaking the tension of the office and bringing us both instantly upright. Dr. Mercer steps into the room, holding a thick beige file in one hand and a glowing digital tablet in the other.

I brace myself instinctively, my body tightening like a coiled spring against Locke’s frame.

Then, Dr. Mercer looks up from her tablet.

She isn’t wearing her usual guarded, carefully neutral medical face. She’s smiling, a broad, warm, strikingly genuine smile that instantly brightens the dim office.

“Well,” Dr. Mercer says, pulling out her rolling stool and sitting down directly opposite us. “I have to apologize for keeping you two locked in the clinic for all this time, but I wanted to be absolutely thorough given everything you’ve been through recently.”

Locke shifts forward, his entire posture turning rigid as tempered iron, “Give it to us straight, Doc.”

“I rushed the MRI results, and scans are completely clear. No signs of tissue mass, no residual inflammation, no structural changes whatsoever.”

“No sign of tumors?” I ask. “Or weird masses?”

“None. If tomorrow’s blood work comes back clean, then I think we can be optimistic about things.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath that I didn’t realize I was holding, my shoulders dropping three inches as a massive, heavy weight of terror lifts off my ribs.

“What about the fainting spell yesterday?” Locke demands.

“You know that the full oncology panels and detailed white counts will be ready by tomorrow afternoon,” Dr. Mercer explains, her tone delightfully relaxed. “However… while we were running the general panel, I had the lab run one specific point-of-care test that takes only five minutes to process.”

“Okay,” I say. “What test?”

“Given your recent symptoms – the sudden morning dizziness, the fatigue, and the extreme sensitivity to smell you mentioned during intake – I wanted to rule out a very basic variable.”

I frown, confusion rippling through the lingering relief. “A basic variable? I thought the dizziness was just extreme stress, not eating, and lack of sleep.”

Dr. Mercer sets her tablet down on her desk, leaning her elbows on her knees, her eyes shining with an unmistakable, breathtaking light. “Zara… you aren’t sick. And your cancer hasn’t returned, not as far as I can see at all.”

Then why did I faint?”

Dr. Mercer smiles softly, her gaze drifting between my wide, disbelieving eyes and the rigid, battle-hardened man standing like a shield beside me. “Because your blood pressure dropped briefly to compensate for a sudden, natural increase in total blood volume.”

My mind stammers, skidding violently off the edge of comprehension. “I… I don’t understand.”

“Me neither,” Locke rumbles.

“It’s because your body isn’t fighting a devastating disease anymore, Zara,” she says gently, the words landing like a thunderclap in the quiet room. “It’s making a life. You’re six weeks pregnant.”
