Chapter 171-1
The big printer in my Dad’s office hums without stopping. It spits out page after page, dropping
fresh white sheets into a pile that’s quickly spilling onto the floor. Next to the machine, three empty
cardboard boxes sit open, while two fresh reams of paper wait on the rug.
“How much more is there?” I ask, stretching my arms over my head and letting out a long sigh. Sur ely we’re getting there.”
Locke sits across from me behind my Dad’s big oak desk. He looks massive in the wooden cha his broad shoulders practically blocking the light from the window. He has his sleeves pushed up to his elbows, showing off the thick, tattooed muscle of his forearms. He looks up from the
computer monitor.
“About three thousand pages left to print, baby,” Locke says and grins at my sputter of disbelief. “You’re the one who said you wanted physical paper. You said looking at a screen makes your eyes
hurt after an hour.”
“I do want paper,” I say, crossing my arms and leaning back in my chair. “Paper is better. You can use highlighters on paper. You can circle things with a red pen. On a computer screen, everything just looks like a giant wall of unfriendly numbers.”
“It looks like a giant wall of unfriendly numbers on paper, too,” Locke ‘teases me. He reaches across the desk, grabbing a stack of twenty warm sheets, and hands them to me. “Here. Start building your mountain.”
“It’s not just numbers, handsome,” I say, taking the paper from him. My fingers brush against his, and a sweet, familiar shiver runs down my arms. “It’s a map. Knox is buying illegal chemicals to make his drugs, but he can’t order them under his real name. He hides his orders inside real shipments going to farms and factories.”
“I know how the bad guys work, baby,” Locke says, his eyes sparkling with quiet humor. “I’m the one
who stole the files from their office.”
“You broke into a building and plugged in a USB flash drive,” I tease back, clicking my red pen with a sharp, happy sound. “That was the easy part. Now I have to do the real work and read all this.”
Locke laughs. “The easy part? I had to dodge security guards and climb through a window, Zara.”
“And you looked very handsome doing it, I’m sure,” I say, leaning across the desk to poke his broad chest with the end of my pen.
Locke catches me before I can draw back, his fingers wrapping gently around my wrist. He doesn’t press hard, but the sudden weight of his hand sends a rush of warmth straight down to my p***y.

He tugs slightly, pulling me forward over the messy desk until my chest is almost resting agains the wooden edge.
that right?” he asks. “You like watching me work?”
“I like watching you do almost anything… especially when you’re being useful.”
“I’m always useful. Some of us just don’t need a thousand trees worth of paper to prove it.”
“Keep talking like that and I’ll make you organize the files from two years ago by hand I warn him
though I can’t keep the smile off my face. “And those are the really messy ones.”
The heavy wooden office door swings open, making us both look up. Jade steps into the room holding two large mugs of tea. She stops dead in her tracks near the doorway, her mouth falling open in shock as she looks around the room.
“What in the actual hell happened in here?” Jade asks, staring at the stacks of paper covering the desk, the leather sofa, and most of the floor. “Did a paper factory explode?”
“Zara’s doing research,” Locke says, leaning back in his chair and linking his hands behind his head. “This is what it looks like when she gets going.”
“This isn’t research, this is insanity,” Jade says, walking carefully around a stack of delivery logs on the rug to set the cups down on the only clean corner of the desk. “Zara, there must be ten thousand pages in here. Are you really going to read all of this?”
