Chapter 29-1

Zara

“And you’re beautiful, Zara. He gives me a sweet, tender kiss. “So fucking beautiful.”

Something in my expression must change for the worse, because Locke’s gaze sharpens immediately. “What?”

For a second, I don’t answer, then I look away. “My confidence is kind of a mess.”

His brow furrows. “Why?”

I hesitate. Is there anything less sexy than a woman telling a man that another man found her so repulsive, that he refused to have sex with her? Even when that woman was desperately in love with him?

Oh, to hell with it. I’m sick to back teeth with lies and secrets. Let’s just throw the truth out there and see what happens.

What’s the worst thing that can happen, anyway? I meet another guy who doesn’t want to fuck me? Oh,

‘Ummm, the thing is….” I say in a not-totally-steady voice. “Knox and I never had sex.”

The words land heavily between us.

Locke blinks once. Then twice. “You mean -”

‘Exactly what I mean.”

His expression becomes so utterly bewildered that almost laugh. He’s so confused, you’d think I’ve just nformed him that gravity occasionally takes weekends off.

‘Never?”

I nod, then shake my head. “Never. We were married for three years, and not once, in the whole of our whole marriage, did we see each other naked, let alone have sex.”

A silence follows, then Locke leans back. “Zara, your ex-husband is a lunatic.”

A laugh escapes me despite myself. “That’s dramatic.”

“No. That’s the only reasonable explanation that I can muster.”

I roll my eyes. “Locke -”

“Zara.” My name sounds different when he says it. Like a promise, or a warning. Maybe like a bit of both. “I’m serious.” His gaze moves slowly across my face. “You are utterly stunning, baby. I mean, drop-dead, pulse-stopping, fucking heart-attack-inducing hot.”

The words hit harder than they should, maybe because he says them so simply, like they’re blatantly obvious to everyone. No big performance, no false charm. Just the facts, ma’am.

I shake my head automatically. “No.”

Yes.

“No.

Claim

“Absolutely yes.”

I groan. “You’re impossible.

“And you’re wrong, and maybe also blind. We should get your eyes checked.”

I open my mouth to argue, but he doesn’t let me:

“Zara, I watched the entire clubhouse stare at you when you were standing by the bar last night, and again. all day today.”

“That’s because I’m the President’s daughter, and the Vice-President’s sister.”

“That’s not why. It’s because you’re sex on legs.”

Heat creeps into my cheeks. “Yeah?”

“Hell, yeah.”

“Well,” I say. “My husband never thought so. Then again, he wasn’t going without, so he probably didn’t even notice my charms, such as they are.”

“Ah.” Something knowing settles into his expression. “Becca, right?”

I blink. “How the hell did you know about her?”

Locke actually laughs. “Because I’ve known Becca for years.”

That’s somehow not the answer I expected. “You have?”

“Oh yeah.” He runs his large hands up and down my back, carefully avoiding the damage made by Knox bouncing me off a brick wall. “Becca’s been hanging around biker bars since she was old enough to get past a bouncer.”

I stare at him. “You’re joking.”

“I’m really not. She always wanted a biker.”

I feel my brow wrinkling. “What?”

“A biker.” He shrugs. “The hotter the better.”

Suddenly, I’m completely, totally, utterly convinced that Becca has fucked my ex-husband and Locke, and I have no clue what to do about that, except maybe leap to my death out of my beautiful arched window. Locke must see it in my face, though, because he immediately shakes his head.

“Nooooo,” he says. “I’ve never touched Becca.”

“Really?” I relax marginally. “Even though she’s a human Barbie doll?”

The teasing fades from his side now: the humor is gone, and the quiet certainty in his voice makes my

“Listen to me, Zara. Knox is the problem, and he always has been.”
