The guest room is cozy, rustic, and bathed in the rich amber glow of bedside lamps.
It’s dominated by a massive, hand-carved wooden bed frame piled high with handmade quilts, crisp white linens, and plush wool blankets.
Titan followed us right up the stairs, his massive paws padding softly against the runner rugs. He’d trotted into the room ahead of us, given every corner a thorough, low-snouted inspection, and then promptly collapsed with a deep, dramatic sigh across the rug on the floor at the foot of the bed settling in like a massive fur-covered guard post.
While Locke sets our heavy leather bags down by the closet, I walk over to the small en-suite bathroom to wash off the lingering grime of travel. Stepping up to the porcelain pedestal sink, I turn on the taps and splash cool water over my face, letting the chill settle my skin before drying off with a fluffy white towel.
Looking in the mirror, the pale, drawn exhaustion from the airport morning sickness has completely vanished. My cheeks are flushed a healthy pink from the cold air, and my eyes are bright.
When I step back out into the bedroom, Locke is waiting right by the foot of the bed, his boot nudging Titan’s huge flank affectionately. Without a word, he steps up behind me, catching me by the waist and pulling me backward against his broad chest. His heavy arms wrap tightly around my middle.
“You doing okay?” he murmurs, his warm breath tickling my skin and sending a pleasant shiver straight down my spine. “Not tired? Stomach holding up?”
“I’m wonderful,” I say softly, turning within his hold so I can wrap my arms around his neck. I look up into his sharp, handsome features: the wolf eyes, the strong line of his jaw. “Your home away from home is beautiful, Locke. And Evelyn is incredible. I can see why you love it here.”
“She likes you,” he says simply, his thumb reaching up to trace the curve of my jawline before he leans down to press a slow, lingering kiss to my lips. “I knew she would. Couldn’t help it.”
“She teased you about spanking you with a spoon.”
“She teases me about everything,” he grunts, though his hands smooth possessively down my back, pressing me closer. “She’s been doing it since we were teenagers. Only person on the East Coast who gets away with half the shit she says to me.”
“I get away with a lot, too,” I remind him, my tone light and flirty.

“That’s because you’re carrying my kid and you look damn good doing it,” he says. “Come on. Let’s get down there before she actually comes up here with that spoon.”
Anthe sound of Locke moving toward the door, Titan is instantly on his feet, his massive frame blocking half the doorway until Locke gives him a firm pat on his broad back.
“Lead the way, boy.”
We head back downstairs to find the heavy timber dining table set with cloth napkins and vintage stoneware. In the center sits a large cast-iron Dutch oven filled with a rich, slow-cooked beef stew, surrounded by a loaf of warm, crusty sourdough bread, fresh butter, and steaming bowls.

Titan moves straight to what is clearly his designated spot near the open hearth, sinking down into a massive dog bed with a heavy thump, his dark, vigilant eyes tracking every movement in the
room.
Dinner is filled with steady, comfortable laughter. Evelyn matches Locke’s dry, deadpan humor beat for beat, serving up generous portions of stew while passing the bread around.
“So, Zara,” Evelyn says, leaning back in her chair with a glass of red wine while Locke cuts thick slices of bread for us both. “Has Rex tried to teach you how to ride the bike yet, or is he acting like
a mother hen?”
“He let me ride on the back,” I laugh, taking a sip of water. “But as for driving it myself? He looks like he’s going to have a heart attack every time I even touch the handlebars. And I’ve been riding bikes since before I was legal to do it.”
