The echo of Knox’s heavy footsteps fading into the darkness leaves behind a silence that feels heavier than the freezing air.

I keep my eyes closed for a long moment, breathing slowly through my nose, forcing my

heart rate to settle.

The revelation of Willow’s betrayal still sits in my chest like a shard of broken glass, but I can’t afford to bleed over it now. Every ounce of energy I possess has to be reserved for

survival.

A heavy metal door near the far loading bay creaks open on rusted hinges.

The sharp, rhythmic clicking of high heels against the concrete floor cuts through the quiet.

“Look at this,” a high–pitched, mocking voice says, dripping with exaggerated pity. “The golden girl of the Grinning Skulls, tied to a folding chair in a dirty old warehouse. How the mighty

have fallen.”

I open my eyes.

Becca struts into the harsh yellow circle of light. She’s dressed in a stunning designer coat that sits unbuttoned, explicitly displaying a round, visibly pregnant belly beneath her sweater.

Her blonde hair is styled, her makeup meticulously applied, but the sharp line of her jaw and the tight, hyper–vigilant movement of her eyes betray the same frantic edge that Knox carries.

She stops three feet in front of me, resting both hands ostentatiously over the curve of her stomach, smoothing the fabric down so there’s no mistaking her condition.

“I had to come see it for myself,” Becca says, tilting her head, a venomous smile spreading across her painted red lips. “When Knox told me his men finally dragged you to this shithole, I thought he was joking. But here you are. Looking just as pathetic as the day of your three–year anniversary.”

I don’t shift in my chair. I don’t pull against the zip–ties. I just stare up at her with a calm, flat expression, letting my eyes drop down to her stomach for a fraction of a second before

rising back to meet her gaze.

“Hello, Becca,” I say, my voice completely free of anger. “You’re looking well.”

Becca’s smile stiffens, a flash of white–hot resentment flaring in her eyes before she forces a loud, airy laugh, her hand caressing her abdomen with slow, exaggerated movements.

“I have everything you could never give him, Zara. A real home. A real future. A real family.”

“Knox told me all about your little hospital drama,” Becca says. “You were never enough for him, Zara. You were broken. Defective. A sick, fragile little bitch who couldn’t even give him a child.”

I see myself.

I see the woman who spent years walking on eggshells, desperately trying to earn a crumb of affection from a man who only loved power and his own ego.

see a terrified girl using a pregnancy as a shield, desperate to convince herself that the monster sleeping in her bed actually cares about her.

A profound, quiet pity washes over me, replacing every trace of venom.

“He treats you like shit, doesn’t he?” I ask. “Doesn’t he, Becca?”

Becca freezes, her cruel smile faltering slightly. “What?”

“I spent years as his wife, Becca. I know how he operates. I know the way he looks right through you when you’re talking. I know the way he makes you feel like you’re taking up too much space in his life just by breathing.”

Becca’s chest heaves, her hands tightening over her stomach. “You don’t know anything about our relationship – ”

“I know he puts the club over everything,” I cut in. “He puts his business, his debts, his image, and his pride ahead of you every single day. And even now, carrying his child… you aren’t his second or third thought, Becca. You’re his tenth… and that’s on a good day.”
