Chapter 193-1
About two hours later, the heavy iron loading door at the far end of the warehouse groans on its rusted hinges.
I keep my spine straight, my head back, and my breath slow and even.
Two sets of footfalls echo against the concrete floor. One set clearly belongs to Knox: it’s heavy, arrogant, his boots landing with deliberate weight. The other step is uneven, dragging, accompanied by the muffled, frantic gasps of someone being physically hauled through the dark.
“Get in here,” Knox growls, his voice ringing off the metal rafters. He shoves a figure forward into the dim light of the hanging overhead bulb. “And shut the fuck up.”
The woman stumbles, catching herself on her hands and knees in the dirt. Her coat is torn at the shoulder, her hair disheveled, her chest heaving as she fights for air.
My heart drops into my stomach.
“Willow,” I whisper.
Willow looks up, her eyes wide, terrified, and glossy with unshed tears.
The moment her gaze lands on me – on my bound wrists, my swollen cheek and split lip, the fresh blood tracking down my neck – a violent, shuddering gasp punches out of her throat.
She pulls herself up, scrambling backward on her hands, her face contorting in sheer, unadulterated horror.
“Oh, goddess,” Willow chokes out, her voice cracking into a sob. “Zara… oh, no. No, no, no…”
She stumbles to her feet, turning wildly on Knox, her hands shaking violently. “What is this? What have you done to her?”
Knox stands near the edge of the light, his hands casually shoved into his jeans pockets, a sickening smirk spreading across his disgusting face. Behind him, Becca steps out from the shadows, her arms crossed tight over her pregnant belly, glaring at Willow with icy disdain.
“What does it look like to you, Willow?” Knox purrs, stepping toward her. “To me, it looks like a family reunion.”
Willow’s head spins back to me, complete and total shock paralyzing her feature by feature. She looks at Knox, then at me, her mind frantically trying to piece together a reality that
makes no sense.
Chapter 193-1
“You… you know him? Zara? You know him?”
“But but how?”
“Current husband,” he snaps. “Nothing fucking ‘ex‘ about it.”
“Your… your husband?” Willow stammers. “No… no, he told me… he said he was just a concerned stranger…”
Knox throws his head back and laughs, a dark, bubbling chuckle that echoes off the iron girders above us. “You really are a naive little bitch, aren’t you, Willow? In the freezing rain the night Cobra kicked you to the curb… crying your eyes out… practically begging for a friend.”
“Wait,” Willow says. “Wait. You – you were waiting for me that night? Outside Locke’s
penthouse?”
“Not for you. I had no idea you even existed. I was just watching Zara and Locke go in and out – and then I saw you.”
Willow blinks, her mouth moving soundlessly.
“You poured your heart out about Cobra being your long–lost father, and how he took Zara’s side over you. You told me about her cancer, and when I told you to, you contacted her again. I knew you’d meet up in person eventually, so I had my guys follow you.”
“Follow me?”
“Yep. And today, you guided my men straight to her.”
“No,” Willow breathes out, a horrific, strangled sound tearing from her throat. She clutches her head as a wave of devastating realization crushes her. “No, no, goddess please no… I didn’t know… I didn’t know!”
