Chapter 201-1
I sit propped up against the stiff pillows of an examination bed in the hospital’s OB-GYN suite, the thin paper sheet rustling softly beneath me every time I shift my weight.
An IV line tugs gently at the back of my left hand, dripping hydration and mild pain medication steadily into my veins.
Locke hasn’t sat down once.
He stands right beside the bed, his broad shoulder wedged against the metal railing, holding my right hand in both of his. His knuckles are rough, his fingers warm, and his grip is so tight it’s almost fierce.
It’s as if letting go for even a fraction of a second might allow the nightmare of the last twelve hours to reach into the room and drag me back into the dark, away from him.
His eyes haven’t left my face for more than a second at a time, tracing the angry purpling bruise on my jaw and cheeks, the raw scrape along my forehead, and the tiny butterfly bandages holding my split lip together.
“How are you feeling, baby?” Locke asks, He raises my hand, pressing a long, lingering kiss against my knuckles. “Be honest with me now.”
“I feel like absolute hell,” I admit softly, my voice cracking slightly around the edges. “But the medication is helping. I’m just… tired, Locke. So bone-deep tired. Every muscle in my body feels like it was beaten with an iron bar.”
“I know,” he says, stroking the back of my wrist, carefully avoiding the raw, angry red ring left by the plastic zip-ties. “We’re going to get you out of here as soon as the doctor clears you and the baby. I’m taking you home.”
Before I can answer, a knock breaks the quiet.
We both look up and over, and see my Dad and brother standing there.
My father steps in first. Right behind him is Mayhem. His dark hair is wet, plastered to his forehead, and he looks like he’s seconds away from losing his shit.
“How are you doing, Zara?” Dad asks softly. “You gave us a hell of a scare, sweetheart.”
He walks over to the side of the bed, reaching out a massive, calloused hand to gently touch the top of my head, his heavy fingers tangling in my damp hair with immense, rare tenderness. He did this all the time when I was little, and I only remember it now.

“I’m okay, Dad,” I say, leaning my head up into his palm, feeling the steady warmth of his grip. “How’s Willow? Is she okay? Is she here?”
“She’s fine, Zara,” Mayhem answers. “We got her showered, wrapped her in about three blankets, and gave her into one of the secure back bedrooms in the clubhouse. She’s dead on her feet, shivering like a leaf, but she won’t even think about lying down until I call her and tell her you’re okay.”
“I think the adrenaline kept her upright long enough to get you through the door,” Dad tells me. “The second the ambulance pulled away, her whole body went limp. But even then, when Stitch tried to lead her away to examine her, she kept repeating that she promised to bring you back to us. Kept saying it, over and over like a chant.”
My throat tightens, hot tears stinging the back of my eyes. “She didn’t have anything left in her, but she forced herself to get me to safety.”
“We saw the marks on her, Zara,” Dad says. “The cuts are pretty deep.”
“Cuts?”
“Her legs were shredded from the debris on the floor that she got blasted into. She said that there was metal and glass everywhere, and she landed in some pretty hard.”
“Oh, my God,” I say in horror. “I had no idea. She didn’t say a word.”
“Stitch took care of her though, right?” Locke asks. “Got her cleaned up?”
Mayhem lets out a low, dry huff of air that sounds almost like a quiet laugh.
“Yeah. Old bastard turned into a mother hen.”
“He what?” I ask.
