amn, Locke, Mayhem says, a genuine, radiant grin breaking across his face. “I think I want one of these now. That’s… that’s the coolest fucking thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Locke lets out a rough laugh, shaking his head as Mayhem slaps him heavily on the shoulder. “Focus on keeping your own head on straight first, Mayhem.”
“I’m serious!” Mayhem insists, crossing his arms and grinning like a fool as he looks at our father “Dad, tell him. I’d make a great father. I’d teach the kid how to ride a dirt bike before they could
even walk.”
Dad snorts softly, “You can barely remember to feed yourself, son. Let’s start small.”
“Hey, I eat every single day!” Mayhem argues playfully, before turning his eyes back to me with a
warm, mischievous glint. “Seriously though, Zarabug… how do you think Jade would feel about it?
You think she’s ready to be a mom? Or is she gonna throw a hammer at my head if I bring it up?”
I can’t help the light, bubbling laugh that escapes my lips, despite the tears still wet on my cheeks
and the dull aches in my whole body. “I think if you walk into the house and tell Jade you want a
baby because you heard a sound on an ultrasound screen, she’ll definitely throw a hammer at you.
Give her some warning first.”
“Nah, she loves me,” Mayhem says, stepping over to give my shoulder a gentle, affectionate
squeeze. “Told you, though. Can’t break us, man, none of us, not even in the womb. We’re too fucking stubborn to die.”
Dr. Kline gently wipes the clear gel from my stomach with a soft paper towel and pulls the white
sheet back up over my hips, giving us a warm, understanding look before turning to adjust the IV drip on the metal pole.
“Everything looks fantastic, Zara,” Dr. Kline says. “We’re going to keep you on hydration fluids for the rest of the night to let your nervous system rest, but as long as you eat a light breakfast and
your vital signs stay steady, I’ll sign your discharge papers first thing in the morning.”
“Thank you, doctor,” I say, my throat tight with profound gratitude. “Thank you so much.”
As Dr. Kline gathers her tablet and quietly leaves the room, the heavy, suffocating tension that had held us all hostage since getting to the hospital completely shatters, replaced by a quiet, profound
peace.
Dad sits down in the heavy visitor’s armchair near the window, resting his forearms on his knees and lacing his fingers together. He watches me with protective eyes as the late-night freezing rain continues to tap softly against the double-paned glass outside. The lines on his face look slightly

Mayhem leans casually against the wall beside him, pulling out his phone with a subtle smirk. He’s likely texting Jade to lay the groundwork for his grand new idea, or checking on the Stitch and Willow situation back at the clubhouse.
Locke doesn’t move an inch from my side. He pulls the small rolling stool right up against the edge of the mattress, sitting down so his broad chest is level with my shoulders. Carefully avoiding the IV line, he wraps his heavy arms around my upper body, lifting me slightly off the stiff hospital pillows to pull me against him.
I rest my cheek against the warmth of his chest, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breathing beneath his shirt. He buries his face in my damp hair, letting out a long, quiet breath that brushes against my neck.
“We’re going to be okay, baby,” he whispers, his arms locking around me like an unbreakable shield “You, me, and our little fighter. I’ve got you. I’ve got you both.”
Listening to the steady, deep beat of Locke’s heart echoing in my ear, perfectly mirroring the rapid, galloping pulse of our baby’s rhythm still ringing in my head, I close my eyes.
The sterile hospital room, the smell of antiseptic, and the lingering phantom shadows of the night fade away into the background.
In their place is only the deep, unshakeable warmth of the men who love me, guarding my sleep as the long, dark night finally gives way to dawn.
