The MC President's Forsaken Wife (Zara and Knox) novel Chapter 418

Chapter 205-1

Two days later

The penthouse feels entirely different when it’s just us girls.

Jade glides across the polished hardwood in high–waisted leather pants, a clinging red silk tank, and sky–high stilettos that click rhythmically against the floor. She carries four towering brown paper bags from the best Chinese joint downtown, a designer tote slung over her shoulder, and her red hair styled into a flawless, glossy blowout.

Right behind her floats Willow. She’s wearing a wide–brimmed felt hat decked out with feathers, an oversized mustard–yellow knitted cardigan over a white linen dress, and an armful of canvas tote bags overflowing with glass jars, dried flowers, and small wooden tubs.

“I brought food!” Jade announces, dropping the grease–spotted paper bags onto the kitchen island with a heavy thud. “Steam–fried pork buns, sesame noodles, stir–fried veggies, shrimp dumplings, spicy tofu, and enough crab rangoon to kill a horse. If I have to eat another bland grilled chicken breast at the clubhouse, I’m going to set something on fire.”

“And I brought the energy cleansers,” Willow says. She sets her totes down carefully on the dining table, pulling out jars filled with dried lavender, small bundles of white sage, and glass bottles of rosewater mist. “I brought every one I could think of.”

“You brought – what?” I ask.

“Energy cleansers. We need to clear the heavy, stagnant air from the warehouse trauma. The penthouse is lovely, Zara, but your aura still has a faint smudge of violet distress.”

I lean against the edge of the kitchen counter, dressed in a loose wool dress that leaves my bandaged wrists free. A genuine laugh bubbles up from my chest, the first light, completely unburdened laugh I’ve had in days.

“I think my aura is mostly just smelling crab rangoon right now, Willow, but I’ll take whatever you’ve got.”

Before Willow can unpack her magical wares, a tiny black–and–tan streak comes hurtling out from behind the living room sofa.

Xena’s floppy ears fly backward like tiny sails as she skids across the floor, her massive paws scrambling for traction on the smooth wood. She lets out a squeaky, high–pitched bark at Jade’s leather pants, her tail wagging so violently her entire body wiggles.

“Oh, look at you, little monster!” Jade says, dropping down to one knee – stilettos be damned

“Hey! No eating the clothing,” Jade scolds fondly, scooping the puppy up into her lap. Xena wriggles frantically, showering her with warm kisses while Jade pretends to be annoyed, holding her up like a furry trophy. “She’s got Locke’s attitude already. Give her a month and she’ll be demanding a leather vest.”

Jade digs into a box of sesame noodles with chopsticks, her sharp eyes taking in my bandages and the pale tint still lingering under my skin. “How are you really feeling, Zara?”
