Chapter 206-1
It takes twenty minutes, half a bag of freeze–dried chicken treats, and three damp hand towels to restore order to the penthouse.
We sit in a line on the living room rug, our face masks thoroughly rinsed away, revealing freshly glowing, soft skin. Xena sits safely tucked between my thighs, chewing contentedly on a rubber bone, though her watchful dark eyes still dart suspiciously toward Willow every time she moves her hands.
“Traumatized by botanical skincare,” Jade sighs, adjusting her silk top as she leans her back against the sofa. “Locke is never going to leave the three of us alone with this dog again.”
“Her aura is settling,” Willow notes softly, sitting cross–legged across from us, sipping her cooled chamomile tea. “She realized our inner spirits were unchanged, despite the physical illusion of the clay.”
“She realized you stopped looking like a demented avocado,” Jade dryly corrects, picking up a chocolate–covered almond from a bowl on the rug. “That’s what did it.”
I lean back, letting out a long, contented breath as the cozy warmth of the room wraps around us. The apartment is quiet again, filled only with the soft melody of an acoustic playlist Willow turned on earlier and the steady click of Xena’s teeth on her chew toy.
I look between the two of them – Jade with her sharp, defensive glam and fierce loyalty, and Willow with her soft, ethereal wisdom and quiet strength. We couldn’t be more different if we tried, yet sitting here on the floor with mess everywhere, I feel closer to them than I’ve felt to anyone in years.
“So,” I say, leaning my elbows on my knees and giving Willow a slow, mischievous grin. “Now that Xena’s blood pressure is back to normal… we need to talk about Stitch.”
Jade’s eyes instantly snap toward Willow like a hawk spotting prey. A slow, wicked smile spreads across her face. “Oh, absolutely. Spill it, Willow. I’ve been waiting all night for this.”
Willow’s cheeks immediately turn a bright, dramatic shade of crimson, contrasting sharply with her pale skin. She tucks a strand of wavy dark hair behind her ear, staring down into her tea mug as if looking for a spell to vanish.
“There’s nothing to spill. Dr. Stitch is just a medical professional who performed his duty with extreme diligence.”
“I told you that I told him about gotu kola and rosehip oil for tissue healing.” Willow continues. “He called it ‘unscientific flower nonsense. But when he left the room, I saw him write the names of the herbs down on his arm.”
“No way,” Jade says, her jaw dropping slightly. “Stitch wrote down herbal remedies?”
“He did.” Willow nods, a triumphant sparkle in her eyes. “He thinks he’s entirely made of logic and scalpel blades, but he has a very warm soul hidden behind all those sterile bottles He just needs someone to remind him that not everything broken can be fixed with sutures”
