Roxy looks at the envelope, then up at me, a soft, almost motherly smile touching her painted

lips. She stands up, smoothing down her leopard print dress, her eyes dropping down to my

bump once more.

“Keep your money for the baby, sweetie,” Roxy says. “Cobra kept my girls safe from Knox’s psycho crew for five years when the cops didn’t give a single goddamn if we lived or died in an alley. We don’t take money for helping the Skulls bring their man home to his child.”

Flea nods, pulling his beanie lower over his ears while Xena rests her broad head on his knee. “Locke beat the hell out of a pimp who was hurting my older sister two years ago, Miss Zara. He didn’t ask for a dime. We’re square. Just make sure he comes back to see the baby.”

“The Skulls kept the developers from razing the homeless shelter on 4th Street last winter,” Buster adds gruffly, standing up and tipping his worn cap to me. “We look out for our own.

“And besides,” Anvil says, his broad face lighting up as he pats his broad stomach. “Your lady Willow stuffed us so full of plant sandwiches, pasta, and warm pastries that we’re gonna waddle out of here like royalty.”

Tears sting the backs of my eyes, a sharp, beautiful heat blooming in my chest.

“Thank you,” I whisper. “You have no idea how grateful I am.”

“Alright, alright, nobody is leaving without care packages,” Willow announces, as she bursts out of the kitchen hauling giant, heavy canvas totes.

They’re packed to the brim with plastic containers of cold pesto pasta, foil–wrapped grilled vegetable sandwiches, loaves of fresh sourdough bread, zip–lock bags of cinnamon buns, cold–pressed juices, and holistic herbal supplements.

“Take these, and share them with everyone on your block,” she says cheerfully. “Eat the bread first, it’s fresh out of the oven.”

Even Jade lets out a soft laugh as Roxy accepts a massive tote bag stuffed with gourmet plant–based food and fresh pastries with a deadpan, deeply amused expression.
