Chapter 244-2
But I can watch the physical reality of a brotherhood preparing for war.
At the bar, Hammer stands under the low pool light, surrounded by three of his strike team
members. He moves with a terrifying, surgical efficiency. He lays out silenced submachine guns on
the polished bar top, checking each bolt and spring with deft, practiced fingers.
Beside him, Stray opens a wooden crate filled with tactical breaching charges: heavy black bricks
of explosive foam and magnetic detonators.
Hammer doesn’t smile. He doesn’t speak except to give short, one–word commands, his jaw tight
as he slams a loaded magazine into place with a sharp, echoing clack.
Down near the rear bay doors, the air grows harsher, stinging my nose with the chemical tang of
solvent and copper. Two prospects emerge from the armory carrying heavy green wooden crates,
their arms straining under the weight of surplus munitions. They set the boxes down with a dull,
concrete–shaking thud.
Beside them, Stitch stands over a stainless–steel medical rolling cart, organizing black nylon
trauma kits with terrifying speed.
He doesn’t look at anyone. His gloved hands fly across the steel, checking arterial tourniquets, chest seals, and hanging vacuum–sealed bags of whole blood onto portable IV racks.
The stark white emergency lighting catches the glint of steel surgical scissors tucked into his
tactical vest – a brutal reminder that he isn’t just preparing to fix broken flesh.
He’s preparing for c*****e.
Further down the hall, near the heavy double doors leading to the rear garage bay, Diesel is pacing like a caged beast. His massive shoulders strain against his leather cut, his face flushed and dark with suppressed rage. He’s surrounded by four prospect road captains, holding a clipboard and pointing sharply at a street layout taped to the wall.
I watch his hand trace a line around the outer perimeter of the city grid – not the dry–cleaning plant itself, but the surrounding roads. He’s setting up the decoy lines.
I can see it in the way his hand moves in wide, sweeping arcs: he’s organizing heavy trucks to block key intersections, creating artificial traffic jams to choke off local police response times while the
strike team moves in.
Every brother who walks past our table carries the weight of what is coming. They move with
purpose, their faces set in hard, unyielding lines.

Some carry heavy, reinforced body armor plates; others carry trauma kits crammed with quick–clot gauze. Trench stumbles slightly under the weight of a breaching ram, his heavy boots skidding across the oil–stained floorboards before he catches his balance, earning a harsh, icy glare from
Rook that cuts through the room like a blade.
And yet, despite the lethal precision of it all, an eerie, unspoken farewell hangs in the air.
I watch Tucker and Bear – men I’ve seen laughing over draft beers at club BBQs – stop near the
hallway archway.
They don’t speak. They don’t share a grand speech.
Bear simply steps forward, grabbing Tucker by the back of the neck, and they press their
foreheads together for three long, silent seconds. A sacred, quiet pact between men who know that some of them might not ride back through those gates tonight.
A lump forms in my throat, thick and painful. I swallow hard, my grip tightening on my mug until my
knuckles turn white.
‘He’s alive‘, I tell myself, repeating the words like a mantra. ‘He’s waiting. He’s fighting‘.
The heavy air in the hall grows thicker, almost suffocating, as the clock on the wall ticks the
sheets, but inside, the noise narrows to a single, terrible rhythm:
The sound of men locking themselves into body armor, checking weapons they fully intend to spill blood with, and preparing to cross a line from which there is no coming back.
My heart hammers against my ribs, each thud mirroring the relentless march of time ticking down. Locke is out there, and every piece of steel locked into place in this room is a step closer to getting
Or burying the rest of my family alongside him.
When I open my eyes again, the chapel doors swing open with a heavy thud.
Dad steps out first, followed closely by Mayhem and Rook. The atmosphere in the main hall
