Chapter 250-1

When Mayhem pushes the frosted glass doors open, the waiting room goes dead silent. Every single pair of eyes snaps to me the second I walk in.

They see my face. They see the tears, the ghostly pale shade of my skin, the way I’m clutching my belly like I’ve been shot.

Jade steps forward instantly, her eyes narrowing. “Zara? What is it? Is he…”

She can’t even finish the sentence. The fear of death hangs over all of them. They don’t know yet that in some ways, Locke is dead.

“He’s alive,” Mayhem says grimly, guiding me down onto the sofa next to Willow. “He’s talking.”

Willow immediately wraps her arms around my shoulders, pulling me into her warmth. I collapse against her, resting my forehead against her neck, my fingers digging into the denim of her jacket. “If he’s alive and alert, why do you look like someone died?” Rook asks, his voice sharp, nervous. He looks between Dad and Mayhem. “What happened in there? Did Locke say something?”

Dad doesn’t sit. He walks to the far end of the room, his boots heavy, and punches the concrete wall between two framed medical posters. The dry impact echoes like a gunshot. Paint chips shower down onto the linoleum.

“He didn’t know Zara,” my father snaps, his voice thick with a rage that barely hides the terror underneath. “He woke up, looked right at her, and asked who the f**k she was.”

A heavy, suffocating silence drops over the room.

Willow freezes, her grip on me tightening so hard it hurts, but I don’t care. Jade takes a slow step back, her mouth opening slightly, her eyes widening in disbelief.

“No,” Bear says, stepping forward. “No, that’s… that’s just the drugs, right? Stitch said they pumped him full of paralytics and veterinary s**t. He’s high. He’s confused. It’s temporary.”

“He knew me,” Dad says, turning around, his face pale, his eyes hollow. “The second he looked past Zara, he saw me standing in the doorway. He called me by name. He knew who I was. Mayhem

too.”

The weight of that statement lands in the center of the room like an unexploded bomb.

If he knew my Dad and Mayhem, it wasn’t total delirium. It wasn’t just a chemical haze cloudin brain. He recognized his club President and Vice–President; he recognized his MC brothers.

He just didn’t recognize the woman carrying his child. The woman that he said he loved.

“Oh, Zara…” Willow whispers, her lips pressing into my hair as tears finally break from her own eyes.

“Oh, sweetie, no…”

don’t cry anymore. The tears have dried on my cheeks, leaving my skin feeling tight, stiff, and cold. I stare at the floor, watching a drop of rainwater drip from Mayhem’s boot and pool on the

white floor tiles.
