I sit at the heavy oak desk in Dad’s back office, the hum of my encrypted laptop the only constant
sound in the quiet room. At nineteen weeks, my body is shifting in ways I can’t even preteh to hide
anymore.
The soft gray sweater I’m wearing clings to the distinct, rounded curve of my stomach. My and
rests over it naturally, a protective habit I don’t even realize I’m doing until I feel the faint, qulet flutter against my palm.
The door creaks open softly, and Trench – the club’s one remaining prospect – steps into the
room carrying a heavy mug.
“Brought you some hot mint tea, Ms. Zara,” he says quietly, setting the mug down on a clean napkin
beside my mousepad. He doesn’t look me directly in the eye for too long – prospect rules – but his
voice is laced with an earnest, hyper–vigilant care. “Stitch said to make sure you’re drinking fluids

the new player on the scene, the one stepping up to run things with Vane.
A heavy set of footsteps echoes down the corridor, followed by low rumbles of conversation.
“I’m telling you, this thread hits a dead end,” Bear’s deep, booming voice carries through the
in the door. “We need Zara’s eyes on it. She can map out Vane’s network faster than any of u
‘She’s been at it all morning, Bear,” Rook grunts in reply, “Give the girl a break. She’s carrying en weight without you dumping the club’s workload on her lap.”
“I ain’t dumping nothing,” Bear mutters back, a note of genuine defensiveness in his voice. “I’m just saying she’s the sharpest mind in this building, and she’s struggling.”
“She’s also nineteen weeks pregnant and living in a hole in the wall because the world blew up two weeks ago,” Diesel’s gravelly voice cuts in. “So back off the pressure. We let her pace herselfy
