“In an eclipse, the moon moves in front of the sun, and everything goes pitch black and freezing
cold. It feels like the light is dead forever.”
“Okay.”
“But the sun didn’t go anywhere, right? It’s still burning millions of miles deep, just out of sight and just temporarily. Locke’s spirit hasn’t forgotten you. His physical body is just sitting in the shadow of the moon right now.”
“I don’t know how long I can live in the shadow, Willow,” I say. “When he looks at me, there’s nothing. Just gray fog. He called keeping me safe his job.”
“f**k his job!” Jade snaps, slamming her hand lightly against the counter. “Listen to me, Zara. You’re allowed to be heartbroken. You’re allowed to sit here and weep and mourn every single piece of what you lost. You don’t have to be the graceful, understanding President’s daughter twenty–four hours a day.”
“I feel like I’m being erased,” I say, the raw, terrifying truth finally tearing out of my chest. “I lay awake in my bed last night, and I realized… if he never remembers, I’m just going to be a ghost walking around his life.”
“Oh, no…” Willow begins.
“Oh, yes. I’m going to watch him rebuild himself from scratch, and one day… one day he’s going to look at another woman with those incredible eyes, and I’m going to be the woman who carries his kid and sits in the corner of the clubhouse. I’ll just be the obligation he couldn’t shake.” “No,” Jade hisses, her eyes flashing with absolute certainty as she drains the last of her wine. “N on my watch. Not on Mayhem’s watch, and not on your Dad’s. If Locke ever looks at another woman like that, I will personally throw him off the roof of the clubhouse, memory loss or not.” I manage a teary giggle. “I know you will.”
“Zara, listen to me,” Willow says. “The universe doesn’t erase love like that. Locke’s mind took a hard shock, and his physical brain is protecting itself, but his soul, the energy you two created together… it didn’t just vanish into thin air.”
“No?”
“Of course not! It’s still woven into the fabric of who he is. His soul remembers, even if his brain is tangled. The body remembers the touch long before the mind finds the words. But right now, you

“I know that’s right,” Jade steps around the counter, coming to stand right beside my stool. “You listen to me, Zara. Locke is a grown man, and he has a whole club of brothers to help him figure out his broken head. Your only job right now is staying focused and keeping yourself and thay baby
“Whether Locke remembers every second of your past tomorrow, or whether it takes him fel years, you will never be erased,” Jade says. “You’re the mother of this baby, and no matter what happens, you and that child will always, always have a home right here. With us. You’re never going to do this alone.”
The word alone dissolves in the warm light of the kitchen.
