Chapter 263-2

Locke stands motionless. I can see the frantic labor happening behind his eyes, the sheer,
brute force of his willpower trying to wrench a memory out of the dark.
He’s practically begging his own brain to give him something, anything. A sudden flash of
color, the echo of my voice, the memory of that narrow studio apartment.
He stares into my face, searching every line of my features, my eyes, the tremble of my lips,
desperately waiting for the spark that will set off the powder keg in his chest and burn
through the gray fog.
Nothing comes.
The silence that stretches between us is heavy, suffocating, and soul–destroying. Locke lets
out a low, ragged breath through his nose, his broad shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch
beneath his cut as the brutal reality of the failure settles over him like a ton of wet concrete.
He doesn’t look angry at me. The look in his eyes is pure, unadulterated self–hatred. He looks
utterly furious with his own broken mind, trapped inside a vault whose combination was
wiped clean.
I swallow hard, stepping back a tiny inch, my heart aching with a hollow, dull throb as I watch
him suffer.
Locke looks down at the belt in his hand, his thumb tracing the cursive script. “When did you
give this to me?”
“For Christmas. Just three months ago.”
Locke c***s his head. “Christmas?”
“Yes. We went up to Maine for the holidays. We spent them with Evelyn.”
Locke freezes entirely, his posture locking up so hard it looks like he’s been struck by
lightning. The color drains slightly from beneath his bruised skin, leaving his jaw pale
beneath his dark stubble.
“Evelyn?” he repeats. His tone isn’t distant anymore; it’s sharp, baffled, and genuinely
shocked. “Wait… what? Evelyn? I took you to Maine to meet Evelyn?”

“Yes,” I say, blinking at the sudden change in his energy. “We stayed for five days. When we
got there, you cut firewood for her until your hands were raw. Titan helped, in his usual way.”
“I took you to her house,” he says, less like a question and more like an impossible equation
he’s trying to work out in his head. He stares at me, his eyes wide and completely blown open
with confusion. “I don’t… I don’t let people near Evelyn. I haven’t brought anyone to her home.
Ever.”
