The MC President's Forsaken Wife (Zara and Knox) novel Chapter 69

Chapter 47-1

The next day

By ten o’clock in the morning, I have grease under my fingernails, oil on my coveralls, and Tucker has already told me three times that I’m doing it wrong. By noon, he’s admitted I was right. I consider that an excellent start to the day.

“You look entirely too pleased with yourself,” Tucker mutters, peering down into the open engine between

“I am,” I chirp.

“You’ve been here three hours. You shouldn’t be correcting me yet.”

I grin. “I’m not correcting you. I’m reminding you.”

“That’s called correcting, kiddo.”

“It’s called helping, old man.”

“It’s called being a pain in my ass.”

I beam at him. “See? We’re bonding already.”

A bark of laughter echoes across the garage, and Mayhem strolls over carrying two coffees and the smug expression of a man who’s been watching the whole exchange unfold for several minutes.

“I told you,” he says to Tucker, handing me one of the coffees. “She gets that from Dad.”

“I do not,” I protest.

“You absolutely do.”

“I inherited his mechanical brilliance.”

“You inherited his ability to think you’re always right.”

I take a thoughtful sip of coffee. “Well… those are remarkably similar skills.”

Tucker groans. “Oh God.”

Mayhem throws his head back laughing. “I warned you, Tuck.”

In a single morning, the garage has become my favorite place in the world. Not because it’s glamorous; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s loud and too warm. The air smells permanently of fuel, hot metal and coffee, with the occasional hint of rubber drifting in whenever somebody rolls another Harley onto the lifts. Music plays somewhere overhead, almost always old rock that Brick insists is ‘real music’, while Diesel argues that anything recorded before he was born belongs in a museum.

Every few minutes someone laughs. Someone swears. Somebody inevitably asks where they’ve left a wrench that’s almost certainly sitting in their own back pocket. Nothing matches, everything works… and every single person inside it makes space for everyone else.

Claim

Mayhem says, nodding toward the engine. You reckon she’s finally fixed? After five weeks of nobody knowing what’s wrong?”

I wipe my hands on a rag, “Start her up.”

Tucker looks doubtful. “You sound certain that you’ve cracked it, Zara.”

“I’m always certain.”

“You’ve been hanging around Cobra too much.

“I was literally raised by Cobra,” I remind him.

“Yeah, good point. OK, here we go.”

Tucker turns the ignition, and the engine coughs once. Twice. Then roars to life.

The entire garage seems to react: Brick lets out a triumphant whistle, Diesel pumps one fist into the air, and Tucker simply stares at the motorcycle for a long moment before slowly looking at me.

“I hate you, kiddo.”

I laugh so hard I nearly drop the rag. “No, you don’t.”

“No.” He sighs dramatically. “I really don’t.”

Before I can answer, Jade bursts through the side door carrying a paper bag almost as big as she is. “I’ve brought lunch!”

“What is it today?” Diesel calls over.

“Burgers.”

“Excellent.”

“And salad.”

The entire garage falls silent.

Brick frowns. “…Why?”

Jade puts a hand on her curvy hip. “Because vegetables exist and you boys are just one pepperoni pizza away from a full-on coronary. None of you are getting any younger or any fitter, so veggies it is. Every day.”

“They don’t have to exist,” Tucker protests.

“They do when I’m bringing you guys food.”

Diesel folds his massive arms. “I refuse.”

Jade smiles brightly. “You’ll eat the salad.”

“I won’t.”

“You absolutely will.”

No chance.”

Claims

Jade reaches into the bag and pulls out a massive and delectable chocolate brownie. She holds it up, and says sweetly, “Dessert comes after salad.”

Brick stares. “You fight dirty.”

“I do, and I also win.”

Five minutes later every man in the garage is eating salad, and Jade catches my eye and winks.

“Amateurs,” she whispers to me, handing me a bottle of water. “They actually think that they can say ‘no’ to me? As if.”
