Chapter 57-2

Cham

At this words, his jaw tightens, and one muscle jumps beneath his cheek. His fingers close around my upper arm hard enough to really hurt, but I don’t even flinch.

“You think Tanner won?” he sneers, spitting the words. “You think he won you?”

“I wasn’t a prize,” I say tartly. “I was never up for grabs.”

“He took my wife.”

“Are you kidding me?” I meet his eyes without blinking. “I walked away, after you knocked up your side piece and then left me in a burning car.”

“I don’t accept that.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

“I’ve always had a choice.”

“That’s exactly the mistake you’ve always made,” I say. “You think you have choices, but you only ever had c ontrol. And now…” I lift the shopping bags slightly. “You don’t even have that.”

The words hit him harder than any slap could have. His entire body stills, and the silence that follows is deafening. His gaze then drops to the paper shopping bags again, one of which has split open, revealing the lingerie nestled inside.

“Red?” he says with a sneer. “Red fucking underwear?”

A tiny smile tugs unexpectedly at the corner of my mouth. “It’s Locke’s favorite.”

That’s a bald-faced lie, of course; I don’t even know whether Locke has a favorite colour. But something inside me needs to say it anyway, needs Knox to understand that my choices no longer belong to him.

His face empties completely. When he speaks again, his voice is almost frighteningly calm:

“You don’t understand what you’ve done, you stupid fucking bitch.”

“No.” I shake my head gently, ignoring the name calling. “I understand exactly what I’ve done. I finally chose someone who chooses me back.”

And for the first time since I’ve known Knox McVale, for the first time in ten long years. he has absolutely nothing to say. He simply looks at me. Then, very slowly… he smiles.

Not the polished smile that charms strangers and biker babes, or the frightening one that terrifies his enemies and used to silence me completely. This one is smaller, colder. It’s the smile of a man who has decided to stop playing by any rules.

“You’ve forgotten something, Zara.”

He releases my smarting arm, takes one slow step backward, disappearing inch by inch into the shadow between two parked SUVs.

“I’ve spent years learning everything about you. I know how to hurt you. I know who you love. I know what

you fear. I know what makes you smile, what keeps you awake at night, what you’ll sacrifice without even t hinking about it.”

Another step back and away.

“I know every version of you, Zara.”

A cold shiver works its way down my spine at those words.

“You think Tanner knows you because he’s fucking you.” The faintest smile touches his mouth. “He only knows the woman you became after you left me.”

His eyes hold mine without blinking.

‘I know the woman you buried.” The words settle over me like ice. “And I know exactly where to find her.” Then he says, with terrifying certainty, “If I can’t control this, then lill control what happens next.”

And just like that, he’s gone, just swallowed by the shadows as though he’d never been there at all.

The parking garage is suddenly full of ordinary sounds again – the distant hum of traffic overhead, the sharp chirp of a car unlocking somewhere behind me, footsteps echoing on another level – but none of them reach me.

Because all I can hear is Knox’s voice.

I know exactly where to find her.

And for the first time since I walked away from him, a terrible thought slips into my mind:

Maybe Knox isn’t trying to drag me back into my old life. Maybe he’s trying to convince me that I never truly escaped it.

I stand frozen, my shopping bags trembling in my hands, until my phone vibrates inside my handbag. I reach in blindly, see a text from Locke.

Baby, I’m just finishing up here and will leave in about thirty minutes. Want me to pick up dinner on the way home? Chinese sound OK?

My vision blurs with my hot tears.

Home.

Only moments ago, that word had filled me with joy.

Now, I have the sickening feeling that since Knox already knows exactly where my home is, he’s looking to burn it to the ground.

And to burn me and Locke with it.
