The Mercenary Queen Strikes Back (Lily Hastings) novel Chapter 52

Chapter 52-

Chapter 52

“Is she nuts? Does she think We can counter-snipe with a handgun? Impossible! Even if she succeeds, she’ll die.” Waylon whispered, his tanned skin almost blending into the shadows.

Judging by the earlier firing range, the super was positioned on the opposite rooftop, about 160 feet away.

Firing downward from an elevated position was far casier than shooting upward from below, especially since handguns, with their short barrels, light weight, and lack of stock stability, had limited accuracy,

Even on level ground, a top marksman would find it challenging to hit a target accurately beyond 100 feet. Past that range, a handgun’s lethality dropped sharply, rarely causing fatal injury.

But Nova actually tried to counter-snipe with a handgun. Now, she faced two deadly obstacles.

Firstly, the sniper was no amateur and would return fire the moment she shot.

Secondly, shooting upward from ground level drastically reduced effective range, and she was facing a target over 160 feet

away.

It was a situation even international sharpshooters wouldn’t dare risk.

The team watched as Nova, pistol in one hand, continuously dodged bullets amid the sniper’s rhythmic shots.

“Damn it! She said I’d hold the team back? Look at her. She’s nothing but trouble!” Waylon hissed, gripping his pistol tightly, about to rush out and pull Nova back.

Just as he moved, Nova, who had been exposed to the sniper’s fire while dodging, suddenly stood still.

She lowered her gaze, focusing. Her battlefield-honed sharp hearing had pinpointed the sniper’s location the moment the trigger was pulled.

Nothing was more dangerous for a sniper than being spotted. They usually needed to move quickly after consecutive shots. The key to a counter-kill lied in seizing the instant the snipers exposed themselves by firing.

This was the moment. Facing the incoming bullet, Nova stopped dodging. She raised her pistol and fired two shots toward the rooftop. She was risking her life.

Waylon, Jordan, and the others could hardly bear to watch, even closing their eyes to avoid imagining her death.

But the imagined scene never happened. Instead, a sharp screech tore through the air.

Sparks burst midair. The last bullet Nova fired collided with the sniper’s with pinpoint accuracy.

At the same time, a heavy thud echoed from the building ahead. It sounded like someone had fallen from the rooftop. Experienced soldiers like Waylon and Jordan understood instantly. It was the sound of the sniper’s body hitting the ground. Not only had Nova survived a fatal situation, but she had accomplished the impossible counter-snipe kill.

Realizing this, Jordan, Waylon, Jose, Wyatt, and the others stared at Nova in wide-eyed shock.

This girl, fearless in the face of danger, turning certain death into victory, was just a student? Her skill was on par with an international sharpshooter.

Watching the breathtaking scene and recalling his earlier contempt for Nova, Waylon swallowed hard. Frozen in shock, he couldn’t utter a single word.

As rigorously trained soldiers, they had never been so stunned. But this time, they were utterly overwhelmed.

It wasn’t until Nova spoke that they snapped back to reality, “Why are you standing there? Move out.”

They had been spotted by these international gitives, and Nova had eliminated their biggest obstacle-the rooftop sniper.

There were many targets to capture. Now, the real battle was just beginning.

“Move. Surround them. Jose, Wyatt, block the exits. Don’t let anyone escape!” Waylon gripped his pistol and issued orders. As the highest-ranking member, he had the authority to assign tasks.

“Got it.” Jose and Wyatt sprinted into action.

Waylon glanced at Nova, who was already moving on her own, pressed his lips tightly, and stayed silent, but his eyes held a new respect. He waved to the remaining teammates, “Move out.”

The fugitives were in the abandoned building ahead. Nova dashed toward the abandoned building, leaving even the tall, muscular special forces members struggling to keep up.

It was 7:30 p.m. Nova still had time before the 9 p.m. curfew at Blake Villa. She intended to finish the operation quickly and get home in time for Fiona’s homemade soup.

A slight smile touched her lips as she quickened her pace.

“Nova, watch out!” Jordan’s warning came from behind.

A machine gun emerged from a fourth-floor window, spraying bullets toward her.

Nova dove forward, evading the bullets smoothly, and slipped into the building..

Some fugitives had already spotted the team, and they ambushed them first.

Since the team was exposed, direct assault was the only option.

Waylon and Jordan swiftly drew their weapons. Though not as agile as Nova, their rigorous training allowed them to charge into the building quickly.

As they entered the building, they saw Nova pressed against the wall near the stairwell, seemingly concentrating on sensing something.

“What’s wrong?” Waylon approached and asked, his tone now free of earlier contempt. He instinctively treated Nova as a trusted partner, forgetting she was just a teenage girl.

Nova relayed the intel in silent lip movements. “Two on the second floor, handguns. One on the third floor, handgun. The rest are all on the fourth.”

The fugitives had set up an ambush, waiting for them to walk into the trap.

Even after witnessing her stunning marksmanship, Jordan and Waylon were stunned once more by her radar-like precise hearing,

Nova signaled for them to stay close behind her and stepped upstairs without hesitation.

At the corner, she pulled the trigger. Two shots rang out. The two fugitives on the second floor collapsed before they could

Her crisp, efficient movement Jeft Waylon and the others shocked again. They realized that her earlier question. “Is killing permitted?”, was absolutely serious,

The thud of the two bodies hitting the floor alerted the third-floor fugitive, who came down cautiously with his pistol, only to be shot in the head by Nova

When the group reached the fourth floor, the special forces soldiers exchanged glances. They felt like followers, useless throughout the operation.

The realization made them start doubting themselves inwardly, ‘Between us and Nova, who are the trained professionals here?’

Nova and the team pressed against the wall, concealed, with only a wall separating them from the final group of fugitives, The doorway to the passage was on her left-no door, just wide open. Just as she prepared to breach, a young man’s cold laugh came from inside. “I never thought you’d track us here. Impressive!

“But… Are you really insisting on a fight to the death? Don’t you care about these two lives?”

As the young man spoke, he waved his hand. Several fugitives, SLRA’s hidden masters, dragged two struggling hostages into the center.

Through the broken glass, Nova, Jordan, and the others saw clearly. The hostages, with guns pressed to their heads, were Maxwell and Hannah.
