The Mercenary Queen Strikes Back (Lily Hastings) novel Chapter 70

Chapter 70-

Chapter 70

To Nova, wiping out a family was effortless. On the battlefield, she wouldn’t have wasted words.

Ghost-Hammer, her most loyal follower, had witnessed countless powerful families fall by her hand, including some Fortune 500 giants.

Those who begged on their knees with their families never moved Novà an inch.

People said the mercenary king Bloodforge’s throne was built on lives and blood, that she was a killing machine, addicted to slaughter.

But only those at the peak, like Ghost-Hammer, understood. On the battlefield, if Nova wasn’t cold-blooded, she would be dead. In this male-dominated world, if a woman wasn’t ruthless, no man would show them mercy.

In Ghost-Hammer’s eyes, this was Nova at her most merciful. For her family’s sake, she hadn’t resorted to her usual ruthless methods.

But to the main family, Nova’s words struck like a psychological blow, leaving them pale and terrified.

“Nova… Charles called out hoarsely, shaken by Ghost-Hammer’s skill. He never imagined Nova knew someone so powerful, who had just thrown Harvey out effortlessly.

“Honestly, for the first time, you didn’t seem so annoying,” Hannah smiled, nudging Nova’s arm.

Alfred’s gaze shifted from the groaning Harvey on the ground back to Nova. His casual gaze was now tinged with scrutiny. After a stunned silence, the main family members finally reacted. “What do you mean? Telling us to shut up?”

“Make us disappear?. You’d need the skills to back that up, little girl,”

“Charles’ useless daughter? Do you think hiring a tough bodyguard makes you special?”

“So what if your bodyguard’s tough? It’s his strength, not yours. Stop putting on airs!”

The main family members weren’t pushovers. Once they recovered, they lashed out angrily.

In their deeply ingrained mindset, a worthless father could only produce worthless children. They held Nova in utter contempt.

“You scum! How dare you scold my boss like that! You’re asking for it.” Ghost-Hammer, fiercely protective, raised his big fists and stepped forward.

With the Bloodblade Mercenary Corps’ power, any member could crush these people like ants.

Seventy of the top 100 on the international mercenary leaderboard belonged to Bloodblade Mercenary Corps. Ghost- Hammer fumed, thinking, “These fools dare disrespect Nova.’

“Enough! Have you no shame? All of you, shut up.” Alfred’s roar silenced the chaos the moment Ghost-Hammer stepped forward.

The family head’s authority left these members trembling into silence.

Alfred turned his shrewd eyes to Nova, studying her as he spoke to Charles and the others. “I failed to discipline them. They spoke out of turn. You’ve traveled far. Come inside with me.”

With that he turned and led the way through the main gate.

As he guided Nova’s group in, Alfred said to the main family members, “You’re no longer needed here. Return to your

rooms.”

With two orders, he dispersed the crowd, proving his authority remained unshaken.

Nova and her group followed Alfred to a study on the second floor of the east villa.

Once inside, Alfred instructed Hudson, “Prepare rooms for them.”

“Right away, Mr. Blake.” Hudson went out, closing the study door behind him.

Now only Alfred, Nova, Maxwell, Hannah, Charles, and Ghost-Hammer remained.

Alfred visibly relaxed and said, “I’m glad you came back. Charles, I thought you might not bring your

children home.”

Hannah flared up instantly and retorted, “Old man, don’t play dumb. You know exactly why my dad didn’t want to bring us back. You’re happy now? Stop pretending to be kind. You’re the one who kicked him out back then! Enough already!”

In her eyes, blood ties didn’t mean squat. She cared only about whether someone was good to her or not. Although Alfred was her grandfather, she cussed him out without a second thought.

“Hannie!” Charles stopped Hannah in a low, warning tone.

Nova and Maxwell watched coldly. Unlike Hannah, Nova keenly noticed the helplessness on Alfred’s face.

“It’s alright. I was wrong back then. It’s natural for the children to resent me.” Alfred waved his hand with a bitter smile.

After Hannah calmed down a little, he continued, “Tomorrow is my 80th birthday. I called you back for an important reason. I’m old. It’s time to step down.

“For years, Daniel, Harvey, and Finley have been pressuring me behind the scenes to step down. I’ve delayed again and again, barely holding on until today.

“I’ve seen through their true nature long ago. Though they’re my sons, if I hand the family over to them, our century-old legacy will be ruined.”

Alfred had clearly let himself get too worked up. He coughed heavily.

Charles hurried over to pat his back gently. “Dad, are you okay?”

Alfred stopped coughing. He waved Charles off and looked earnestly at Nova, Maxwell, and Hannah.

Catching his breath, Alfred said with deep regret, “I’m fine. Only recently did I confirm Daniel is colluding with underground organizations

“Harvey, relying on his son’s rank of 2099th on the mercenary leaderboard, is secretly dealing with international underworld forces, planning to sell off our assets once he takes over.

“Finley is in cahoots with Harvey. If they succeed, our family will be destroyed.”

At his age, Alfred finally realized that the three sons he valued most were all scheming, while Charles, the one he expelled years ago, was the most honest and steady. The thought filled Alfred’s with remorse.

“Dad, it’s not too late. There must be a way to turn things around,” Charles quickly reassured Alfred.

Nova had already grasped the underlying message–Alfred’s three sons were coveting family leadership, and if they succeeded, they would overturn a century of legacy.

That explained why Alfred had been reaching out frequently lately, hoping Charles and his children could inherit the family.

Sure enough, Alfred turned his last hopeful gaze to Nova, Maxwell, and Hannah. Then, he declared solemnly, “Charles, your three brothers have planned it all out. Tomorrow’s birthday banquet is when I step down.

“But before that, I demand one final ‘Ultimate Test’ for all eligible young successors. The winner will become the new head of the Blake family.”
