The mere idea of what she had been about to say-

It hit him like something lethal.

Iva’s breathing was uneven under his hand, her eyes burning into his as she grabbed his wrist and pushed it away from her mouth.

“I’m giving you what you want,” she shot back immediately, her voice raw, filled with pain and defiance.

Caleb’s expression darkened instantly.

“When did I say that I don’t want this bond?” he raised his voice, frustration and something deeper breaking through now. “When did I ever say that?”

But her next words-

They stopped him cold.

The fight.

The anger.

Everything.

“When you decided to betray our bond,” she said, her voice shaking but firm, “and touch another.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Caleb stared at her.

“What…?” he breathed out, his voice barely there now. “What do you mean?”

Iva’s eyes flashed, fresh tears falling freely now, no longer held back.

“Stop playing the hypocrite, Caleb,” she snapped, her voice breaking through the silence like glass shattering. “Or did you forget how the Goddess’s bonds work?”

He didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

Didn’t speak.

“I felt it,” she continued, her voice trembling as her hand pressed against her chest, right over her heart.” Through our mate bond…”

Her gaze locked onto his, full of pain, accusation, and something that looked dangerously close to heartbreak.

For a moment-

Everything stopped.

Caleb didn’t move, didn’t speak, didn’t even seem to breathe as Iva’s words echoed in his mind, repeating, reshaping, aligning with fragments of memory that suddenly refused to stay scattered.

I felt it… your betrayal.

And then-

It hit him.

Hard.

Like a sudden crack of lightning tearing through darkness.

Sonia.

The garden.

That moment.

Her sudden closeness.

The way she had leaned in without warning-

The kiss.

His eyes widened slightly as the realization crashed over him, sharp and undeniable, his entire body going rigid as the pieces finally fell into place.

“Fuck…” he breathed out under his breath, the word heavy with frustration and dawning clarity.

Iva had felt it.

Through the bond.

That single moment.

That one unexpected, unwanted contact-

She had felt it as betrayal… he forgot how the bonds worked.

His gaze snapped back to her, urgency rising instantly.

“This is a misunderstanding,” he said quickly, his voice firm but edged with something almost desperate now. “I didn’t betray you. I didn’t betray our bond.”

Iva let out a small, humorless laugh, her expression tightening as she shook her head.

“Don’t insult my intelligence,” she shot back, her voice sharp despite the tremble beneath it. “Or believe

that I’m stupid.”

“I’m not,” Caleb insisted, stepping closer, his hands flexing slightly at his sides as if trying to hold onto

control. “Someone kissed me. By surprise. I pushed her away. That’s it. Nothing else happened.”

The words hung between them.

Simple.

Clear.

But heavy with implication.

Iva stared at him.
