“A test subject?”
Charlotte’s fingers curled tighter on the tabletop.
“Three days?”
She lifted her gaze, her eyes dark and sharp, and met Marcia’s. There was a hint of carelessness in her voice, but her words were icy. “I told you I’d give you one week. When that’s up, I’m out.”
Marcia frowned and glanced at her father.
After spending some time with Asclepius, they’d figured out he was strange. Really strange.
“We can pay you more,” Aloys said quietly.
“I’ve already got enough.” Charlotte barely looked at him, the corner of her mouth twitching in a cold smile. “I said this when I arrived. If you don’t trust me, don’t hire me. If you hire me, then trust me.” She tapped her fingers on the table, clearly annoyed. “You went through all this trouble to bring me here, but you’re second-guessing me at every turn. What’s the point? Two days left. If you don’t show me the antidote by then, you can keep playing with this mess yourselves. I’m done.”
She got up, not paying attention to how the three of them looked, and headed straight for the door.
She stopped at the threshold, back to them. Her voice was cold. “And don’t forget to pay me for today. Make sure it’s in my account.”
No one replied.
After Charlotte left, G2 finally broke the silence. “Aloys, Asclepius has already reorganized the experiment. When are you going to hand over the antidote?”
Aloys’s eyes narrowed. “It’s not the right time.”
On the surface, Asclepius was just here for the money, but there was something off about him. His father had always warned him that Asclepius was not a simple man.
“We can’t risk giving him the antidote until he’s finished the dissection and found the cause of the gene mutation,” Aloys said, voice low and calculating. “Otherwise, I can’t trust him.”
Coming to the Isle of Veil meant certain death. If they could just catch one of the mutated subjects, developing the antidote was only a matter of time.
Marcia smiled, satisfied.
The Churchill family was also very interested in these mutations. As long as this research succeeded, the marriage between their families would go through as planned.
Mr. Churchill…
If she couldn’t have his heart, she’d still have him.

In her room, Charlotte sat in front of the computer, fingers flying across the keyboard, trying to break into Nora’s system.
