Anthony leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to Charlotte’s forehead. His voice came out rough, barely more than a whisper.
“Hmm…” Charlotte pursed her lips, thinking it over. “Yeah, you kind of do.”
He didn’t get upset. Instead, he scooped her up and settled her into the bathtub, letting the warm water fill around her. His hands moved carefully as he washed her, making sure not to touch the bruises on her legs.
“Are the mutation symptoms getting worse?”
Charlotte nodded, watching his face. Her voice was low and gravelly. “I can handle it.”
It was just some weakness in her arms and legs. Any other pain barely registered with her.
Anthony’s hands paused for a second. He leaned forward, pulling her close, holding her as if he could shield her from everything. His voice was soft and low.
“Don’t be scared. I’m not going anywhere.”
No matter what happened, no matter where they ended up, he wasn’t going to let her face any of this alone.
“Don’t make it sound so sad,” Charlotte said with a small laugh. She bit his earlobe, just to tease him, and whispered, “Dr. David’s already moved the drug screening into the third round. We’ll have news soon.”
“Do you really have to go back to Isle of Veil right now?” Anthony stared at her for a few seconds, then let out a quiet laugh. “Why not wait for the cure, take it, and then deal with everything else?”
“I can wait. But the people on Isle of Veil can’t,” Charlotte said, closing her eyes as the warmth and his gentle touch soothed her. “They’ve been watching Cabinda, trying to find something they can use against me.”
The only way to stop them for good was to destroy the genetic research institute. That was the only way to cut off their plans completely. Besides…
She opened her eyes and looked up at Anthony, something serious flickering in her gaze.
Who knew how much longer her body would last? The sooner she finished this, the better. No way was she going to let everything her grandmother had worked for go to waste.
Anthony didn’t argue. He wrapped her in a towel and carried her back to bed. He found some ointment in his bag and gently rubbed it onto her wounds. By the time he finished, Charlotte was already asleep, her head half-buried in the blankets.
