Dr. David’s head was spinning. Was this really happening, or was it just some twisted joke?
He forced himself to calm down, wiped his face, and gripped his phone a little tighter. His voice was completely serious. “Anthony, messing with gene mutations on purpose is even riskier than inheriting them. You know that, right…”
“I know.” Anthony didn’t let him finish, his tone steady and determined. “Just tell me if it can be done.”
“It can,” Dr. David said, the idea still making him uneasy. “But we’re still studying the mutation. Figuring out what’s causing the illness will take time.”
“It’ll still be faster than waiting for a cure.”
Artificial gene mutations had been tried decades ago, but they always ran into rejection issues and never fully succeeded. With Lottie’s skills, though, fixing those problems and finding the source of the mutation shouldn’t be that hard. Three months... That sounded about right.
“Alright.” Anthony’s reply was quiet and cold. “Don’t let Lottie find out about any of this.”
“Anthony, you’re putting me in a really tough spot here. I work for Lottie, remember?” Dr. David let out a long, dramatic sigh. The last time he’d helped Anthony trick her, Charlotte had been furious and ignored him for ages. And this time, Anthony’s life was on the line. Everyone knew Lottie cared about Anthony more than anything. She’d rather get hurt herself than see him suffer.
“If anything goes wrong, I’ll take the blame,” Anthony said, his voice steady.
There was a long pause on the line, then Dr. David muttered, “It’s not like you can stand up to Lottie anyway.” If something really happened, even Anthony wouldn’t be able to protect himself.
Anthony didn’t answer.
. . .
The next morning, after breakfast, Charlotte and Anthony headed to the hospital together. They were wrapped up in coats and hats, trying to keep a low profile, but their height and looks still drew plenty of stares.
Hamlin’s room was in the VIP wing. It was a quiet, two-bedroom suite with its own kitchen and bathroom. When they walked in, Morton was hunched over the table, taking apart a toy gun, while Zoe was gently feeding her husband some porridge.
