Could Charlotte really be the girl with the genetic mutation—the one Newell found six years ago? If that was true, why hadn’t she recognized him? Why would she go so far as to kidnap him? And it wasn’t just her. Newell didn’t seem eager for Charlotte to know who he really was, either.
All these questions piled up in Damaris’s mind, making her thoughts a mess. If Newell had once saved Charlotte, would she hand over the antidote if she found out he was dying from the same mutation? Damaris’s eyes darkened, her expression impossible to read as she thought things through.
At that moment, the family doctor arrived, almost running, and started patching up Rena. The bullet had gone in deep—just a bit closer to her heart and it would have been fatal. If she didn’t rest and heal, the injury could leave her left arm completely useless.
Rena was soaked in sweat from the pain, tears brimming in her eyes as she stared at Allanson. She felt wronged, but there was nowhere for her anger to go.
“Grandfather...” Her voice shook.
Allanson watched her with a cold, unmoved look. He waited a few seconds before speaking, his tone sharp. “You’ve lost to her so many times, but you still went looking for trouble. Everything that’s happened is your own fault.”
Rena bit her lip and fell silent. Aloys looked even worse, standing there like he was frozen.
All he could think about was what Allanson had shouted in anger. Charlotte is family. She’s my granddaughter. So Allanson really did have other plans for Charlotte.
“Father, are we just going to let the bracelet go?” Aloys tried to hide the worry in his voice, but he couldn’t help sounding bitter. Decades of hard work, and just when the antidote was within reach...
“The bracelet she took might not work,” Allanson replied. He leaned on his cane, gaze fixed somewhere far away, his expression hard to read.
That carnelian bracelet was supposed to keep the serum safe. If it got dropped, it would crack. Air would get in, mix with the liquid, maybe even ruin it. You couldn’t use serum that had been exposed like that.
