Dr. David finally felt some of the weight lift off his shoulders. He let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. “So, it’s been over a month now, right?”

“More or less.”

Charlotte leaned against the wall, looking relaxed. She glanced down at her stomach, which looked completely normal, and gave a little smirk. “Honestly, the timing couldn’t be worse.”

Dr. David gave a gentle smile. He was worried, of course, but a new life was always something to celebrate.

“We have ultrasound equipment in the lab. Want to take a look at the baby?” Dr. David’s tone was warm and caring.

He couldn’t help being curious. He wondered what the baby of Lottie and Anthony would look like. Maybe, one day, he’d hand the institute down to this child.

Charlotte checked the time and nodded. “Sure, why not.”

A few minutes later, Charlotte was lying quietly on the exam bed. Her shirt was lifted halfway, revealing her smooth, pale stomach. She wasn’t that far along, but there was a small bump starting to show. The little one was growing, safe inside her.

“Nine, the gel might feel a little cold. Sorry about that,” the doctor said softly.

The young doctor had just started working in the lab. She’d never met Charlotte before, but she’d heard all kinds of stories. To her, Charlotte was basically a legend. She never imagined the first time they’d meet would be for an ultrasound.

Her voice shook with nerves.

“It’s okay. Go ahead,” Charlotte said, giving her a small, reassuring smile.

“Yes, ma’am.”
