Charlotte could practically see Newell grinding his teeth on the other end of the line. She let a small smile tug at her lips. “Yeah, it’s a bit of a surprise.”
“Are you happy about it?”
Newell rubbed his temples. He already looked sick, but now he seemed even paler. Still, his voice stayed gentle.
“A little,” Charlotte admitted in a soft voice. She sounded lighter than usual, though there was a touch of complaint in it. “But it’s also kind of annoying. I’ve got a whole crowd of people keeping an eye on me.”
She was a doctor, after all. Nobody knew her body better than she did. But she couldn’t deny it. She was happy.
“The antidote in your bracelet needs to be extracted, and then we need to run clinical trials,” Newell said, pushing down whatever disappointment he was feeling. He switched gears, his tone turning careful. “Right now, there are only two people in the world with this genetic mutation. Besides you, there’s Mr. Churchill.”
“Your body isn’t fit for clinical trials. So…” Newell paused for a second, his voice dropping lower. “How about I go grab Mr. Churchill and bring him to Cabinda? You could run the trials on him. What do you think?”
Charlotte frowned as she listened to his easy tone. Her mind started working quickly.
After a quiet moment, she finally spoke. “Newell, you seem to know a lot about Mr. Churchill’s whereabouts.”
Last time, Newell had caught him in under two hours. For someone with DM’s resources, catching anyone else would have been a piece of cake. But this was Mr. Churchill. That man might be a bit clueless sometimes, but he wasn’t helpless.
“Do you have some kind of connection to him?” she asked.
Charlotte walked into the living room, glancing around before her gaze landed on the man cooking in the kitchen.
Newell didn’t answer right away. He’d known when he made this choice that he might have to reveal who he really was. He’d prepared himself for Charlotte’s questions. He just hadn’t expected the bracelet to act up.
“Has pregnancy made your imagination wild?” Newell let out a low laugh. “If you want him, I’ll bring him to you. If you don’t…”
