“Yeah, that’s right.” Seeing Emily’s stunned face, Kenneth couldn’t stop a little grin. “You’re the one who liked me first. Don’t tell me you forgot?”

“It’s fine,” Kenneth said as he set down his glass and inched a bit closer, his eyes never leaving her face. “You’re just hurt right now. Once the meds kick in, you’ll feel like yourself again.”

Piecing together what Kenneth had just said with what Charlotte told her, Emily finally let it sink in. The man in front of her... he really was her fiancé?

“I was kind of rude to you just now,” Emily admitted. She gathered her courage, biting her lower lip. “Also...”

“What’s your name?” Her voice came out soft.

“Kenneth,” he answered, that same gentle, patient smile on his lips.

“Oh.” The silence between them was thick and awkward, and before she could stop herself, Emily reached out her hand. “Nice to meet you.”

She heard herself and winced inside. Did she really just introduce herself to her own fiancé? Who does that?

Kenneth didn’t take her hand right away, just looked at her with something like amusement in his eyes.

Time seemed to stretch. Right when Emily was about to awkwardly pull her hand back, Kenneth finally took it. His palm was warm.

“Nice to meet you,” Kenneth said, his voice low and husky as he gently squeezed her hand. “I’m Kenneth. Your fiancé.”
