Inside the lab, Charlotte wore a respirator and protective gloves. She sifted through the T4icy data Dr. David had managed to pull together, glancing from the screen to the colorful vials spread out in front of her. Her face was beautiful, but right now, every line was drawn tight with worry.
“How’s it looking?” Dr. David hovered nearby, hands poised as if he could help at any moment.
“The data’s incomplete.” Charlotte screwed the cap back on a vial. She’d been on her feet for three hours, and fatigue had started creeping into her eyes.
“Incomplete?” Dr. David’s expression shifted instantly, concern settling in. “What are we going to do? This is the best information we’ve been able to get.”
With the drug almost nonexistent on the black market, finding any real details had been nearly impossible.
“I’ll find a way,” Charlotte said. She closed her laptop, slid the reagent back where it belonged, and shot him a look. “Make sure we’ve got all the necessary meds ready ahead of time.”
“Of course.” Dr. David followed right behind, warmth and worry in his eyes. “Are you sure you’re alright?”
Just yesterday, he’d run another round of blood tests on her. The gene-mutation effects were shockingly slow, which, as he suspected, was probably because she was pregnant with a daughter.
“I’m fine,” Charlotte answered, taking off her mask and gloves, her voice relaxed. “Just a little dizzy and the occasional heart flutter, but it’s under control.”
Dizzy. Heart palpitations. The symptoms were starting to show.
Dr. David’s lined face scrunched up with anxiety. “If it gets serious, you can’t just push through.”
“I know. I’d never risk my own life,” Charlotte said. She washed her hands, dried them off, and managed a small, confident smile. “Believe me, when it comes to mutations, I know what I’m dealing with.”
Dr. David opened his mouth, but couldn’t argue with that. She was right.
...
“It didn’t.” Charlotte shook her head, arms slipping around his neck, holding on to him like a koala. Her voice was soft, a little muffled. “The data’s a mess. I’ll need to run some blood tests and do more analysis.”
Anthony nodded, scooping her up and heading over to the couch. His tone was a soft rumble. “Don’t stress. We’ll work it out.”
Charlotte pouted. She couldn’t help it. She was worried sick.
Emily had overdosed on the drug, and they hadn’t had a chance to treat her right away. Nobody knew what kind of damage that might have done. The sooner she could figure out an antidote, the better.
“Call Kenneth. Tell him to bring Emily here,” Charlotte said quietly.
“Got it.” Anthony sat down with her in his lap and shot Hans a look.
“Yes, Anthony,” Hans replied immediately, already moving to take care of it.
