Half an hour later, the car rolled up in front of the lab.
The door opened and Kenneth stepped out first, tall and steady.
Emily was still hurt, moving slowly and a little awkwardly. Kenneth’s first instinct was to lift her up, to help, so he held out his hand. Right in front of her. Emily’s big eyes wavered a little and she bit her lip, staying perfectly still.
This kind of closeness just didn’t feel natural.
“I’ll help her, Kenneth,” Helen said, coming up with a sweet smile before he could say more.
“Thanks, Helen.” Kenneth saw how uncomfortable Emily was. He dropped his hand, a hint of disappointment in his eyes, and held the door so she wouldn’t hit her head. “Watch out, don’t bump yourself.”
“Thank you.” Emily gripped Helen’s hand and carefully climbed out. It was obvious to everyone that she didn’t mind Kenneth being there, but she just didn’t want to be touched. Kenneth nodded, keeping back, following her with a quiet, gloomier look than usual.
It used to be so different. Emily would have followed him anywhere, no hesitation. He never thought things would change like this.
Watching her walk away, all thin and pale, Kenneth could only give a bitter smile. Maybe this was karma, honestly.
But if he thought about it, compared to the ten years Emily devoted to him, he deserved to spend a lifetime making it up to her. However cold or distant she was, he had it coming.
Even if she never remembered what they were, he’d just have to win her back, one day at a time. However many decades they had left, every single one belonged to her.
Inside the blood lab, Emily sat quietly on a chair, her hands clenched together in her lap.
“Here, drink this.” Charlotte walked up and handed her a cup. “They’re drawing a lot of blood today, so be strong.”
“I’ll be okay.” Emily took it, drank, and wiped her mouth, mustering a bright smile.
“Alright, rest for ten minutes.” Charlotte watched her for a moment, couldn’t resist, and gently pinched Emily’s cheek. Her voice went soft. “Just sit right here.”
Kenneth hovered nearby the entire time, worried she might feel hungry, or thirsty, or just plain tired. He kept bringing her snacks, fruit, even a pillow, fussing over every little thing.
“I’m not hungry, but thanks,” she said.
