Lottie’s friend was at Kingswood University too. Judging by the age difference, maybe she was twenty at most.
“Drink up,” Roger said, clinking his glass with Donald’s and dodging the question entirely.
As they chatted, Roger kept stealing glances at Stella. His feelings must have been obvious by now, but honestly, what was the point? Stella never gave him the slightest bit of attention.
Ten minutes later, the sky was still glowing from the proposal drones spelling out their message, lighting up the night.
Anthony piloted the helicopter and landed softly on the hotel roof. Not long after, he appeared on the rooftop in a sharp suit, holding a bright bouquet of sunflowers. It was like he was strolling out of a dream, walking in starlight.
“Is this proposal still going?” Kenneth groaned. He rolled his eyes so hard he looked like he might see the back of his own head. “Doesn’t this ever end?”
“Emily saw the whole thing. If I can’t pull off a proposal later, I swear I’ll just…” As soon as the words left Kenneth’s mouth, everyone looked at him.
Meeting Charlotte’s casual stare, Kenneth swallowed his threat and mumbled, “I’ll go sit at Imperial Heights and cry my eyes out until you’re all fed up with me.”
Everyone just looked at each other in silence.
While they were joking around, Anthony walked straight to Charlotte.
She didn’t move from her chair and still had a hot chicken wing in her hand, halfway through eating.
“You’re giving me the ring right now?” Charlotte asked, blinking at the blue velvet box in Anthony’s hand. She looked like she’d been caught off guard.
“Yeah.” Anthony stepped closer. His eyes were dark and intense, locked on her, and even his voice was low and shaky from nerves.
“Shh.” Charlotte flipped open the box, holding the gorgeous diamond ring with her fingers. She looked right at Anthony, lifting an eyebrow just a little. “You planning to just stand there?”
Anthony stared at her for a second, then got down on one knee like he’d been waiting for her permission, grinning at her with pure adoration.
“Do you love me?” Charlotte twirled the ring in her left hand, resting her chin on her right. Her lips curved in a lazy smile and her voice practically purred.
“I only love you,” Anthony replied, sitting up straight, his face completely serious, his words entirely genuine.
Charlotte leaned in, eyes sparkling, watching him over the ring. She smiled and tilted her head a little. “Say something sweet. If I like it, I’ll marry you.”
Anthony never took his eyes off her. His voice came out soft and deep, every word full of emotion. “When the whales sink to the bottom of the sea, when the stars fall to the deepest part of the night, when the wind disappears into the forest… I’ll still belong to you.”
