The early morning light crept in through the curtains.
Charlotte woke up on her own, her body clock already in motion. She opened her eyes slowly, still lingering in sleep, and reached out to the other side of the bed. The sheets there were cool, and that was all it took for her to really wake up. A tiny frown appeared on her pretty face.
She was still gathering her thoughts when the bedroom door swung open.
Anthony stood there, already dressed and put together, holding a breakfast tray like it was something precious.
Oatmeal, pizza, fried eggs... all her favorite foods, even if they looked a little rough around the edges.
“You’re up,” Anthony said.
He set the tray down, then gently scooped her up and carried her into the bathroom. He perched her on the counter, tied up her long hair, and squeezed some toothpaste onto her toothbrush. His voice was soft as he spoke close to her ear. “Go ahead and get washed up. We’ll eat, then head to the airport.”
“Alright.” Charlotte accepted the toothbrush without protest and started brushing her teeth, quietly, just going with the flow.
Anthony didn’t leave. Instead, he hovered behind her, silent for a few moments, then wrapped his arms around her waist. His hands rested against her stomach, almost absentmindedly, and he let his chin drop gently onto her shoulder. There was something heavy about him. She could see it in the mirror, in the way his eyes looked and the tension in his body.
Charlotte’s own gaze softened for a second before she carried on brushing her teeth.
After breakfast, both of them got ready, their masks already slipped on, bags in hand. It was time to go.
But as soon as they stepped outside, they found themselves facing a group waiting at the exit. The people from the International Medical Alliance were there, along with local doctors and a handful of patients. They’d all come to see them off.
A man at the front stepped forward a little. He looked like their team leader, keeping a respectful distance, clearly worried about spreading illness. His voice was full of sincerity. “Dr. Black, thank you. We’re truly sorry about what happened here.”
They’d been lucky she wasn’t infected. Anything else… well, he didn’t even want to imagine the consequences.
