The subordinate kept quiet, stepping aside and watching the group with cautious eyes.
If this hand lost… The whole casino would probably tremble.
“Keep going. Show the cards,” Rena said.
The dealer was about to move when Charlotte spoke up, her voice calm but sharp. “Rena, you’re not thinking of backing out, are you?”
“It’s just seven billion. The Hawk Family wouldn’t even blink at that,” Rena replied, but her voice gave away her nerves.
Charlotte smiled. If she’d known Rena was this easy to rattle, she would’ve raised the stakes even higher. Besides, her dad had a share in The Hawk Family’s fortune. Why not use it?
“That works for me.”
Charlotte pressed her lips together, then spoke slowly. “Let’s flip the last two cards at the same time.”
“Fine by me.” Rena gave a cold laugh. She’d never seen anyone so eager to walk right into a trap. “Go ahead.”
The dealer turned over Rena’s final two cards. No surprise—both were Kings.
Three Kings. Thirty-nine points. The highest hand in the deck if you didn’t count the jokers.
Rena smirked, her eyes already drifting to the pair across from her. She was already thinking of her reward—a dinner with that handsome, elegant man. Tonight was going to be perfect.
With everyone watching, the dealer in white gloves revealed Charlotte’s last two cards.
Jokers.
It didn’t matter what anyone else had. The jokers wiped the floor with every other hand.
The room froze. Every eye landed on Charlotte.
She had the jokers. She’d won.
Rena glared at Charlotte, voice low and icy. “You cheated!”
“Games are supposed to be fair. You cheated first. If I didn’t play back, wouldn’t I just be getting played for a fool?”
Charlotte was a little taller than Rena. She leaned forward, eyes bright and sharp, her presence impossible to ignore. The room felt smaller, quieter.
Rena’s words died in her mouth.
Not only did Charlotte know she was cheating, she’d turned the tables right under her nose. And she’d never even noticed.
“Oh, and one more thing,” Charlotte said, her voice cool. “Since I won, the condition for the extra bet is…”
Rena stared at her, confused.
Charlotte didn’t give her a chance to recover. Her tone dropped, icy and sharp. “Go look in the mirror. You really think you’re good enough for my man?”
