The crystal chandelier cast a brilliant glow across the spacious living room.
The man sat there alone, cloaked in a solitary, desolate silence.
Drip—
Suddenly, the torn wound on his hand split further, fresh blood meandering down his knuckles.
Finally, it gathered into a heavy drop and fell onto the floor, blooming into a vibrant crimson splash.
In a daze, Xavier closed his eyes as a fleeting memory surged through his mind.
Back when he and Elena were dating, they had run into a group of drunks, just like his brother had tonight.
The intoxicated men had cornered them, eyeing Elena with predatory lust.
To keep her safe, he pulled her behind him and told her to run.
Back then, Elena acted like she was madly in love with him. Even though he played the part of a penniless nobody, she never showed a hint of disgust and even gave him a monthly allowance.
So, he genuinely believed she wouldn't leave, and he was just about to urge her again to run for safety.
To his surprise, she was incredibly obedient. Without a second of hesitation, she turned and sprinted away.
She left him completely alone to face a gang of aggressive drunks.
He had been trained, so taking down a few thugs wasn't an issue.
However, two or three of them had knives.
In a brief moment of distraction, a blade slashed his arm.
It wasn't until he had incapacitated all of them and Elena confirmed the coast was clear that she finally scurried back.
At the time, an inexplicable sourness had filled his chest. He had asked her, "Babe, you just ran off and left me. Weren't you worried I'd get hurt?"
He still remembered her reaction. She was calm, logical, and composed. "What else was I supposed to do? You yelled at me to leave. If I didn't listen, I would have stayed and just been dead weight!"
As she spoke, she reached up and stroked his cheek to comfort him. "Come on, I'm back, aren't I? If I hadn't left, you would have been distracted trying to protect me, and we both would have gotten hurt. That would have been stupid!"
"You know I hate pain, Xavier. Facing down all those guys... I didn't have time to overthink it! Besides, I ran away to call the cops, not to abandon you..."
"So, don't be mad at me. If it makes you feel better... next time, you run first, and I'll stay back to fight them off. We'll take turns, fair?"
She had made a logical point.
Yet deep down, Xavier still hadn't felt right about it, even if her last few words had managed to make him laugh. "Idiot, you think there's going to be a next time? I'm not mad. Even if there is a next time, I'll still be the one protecting you."
After saying that, he held out his injured arm, feigning a bit of grievance. "But babe, I'm bleeding... didn't you even notice?"
She gasped, cradling his arm, a flicker of genuine distress crossing her face.
"You took down a whole gang by yourself and only got this little scratch? You're amazing! Let's go. The cops will handle them. I'll take you to the hospital to get patched up, and then we'll go home. I'll cook you something delicious to make you feel better. Sound good?"
He had pursed his lips, tilting his head like a massive golden retriever to nuzzle into her palm.
