"Don't take it off..."
"Ouch! Ouch, ouch, ouch~"
Seeing the girl about to strip off the robe, the young man rushed over, reaching out to stop her.
In his panic, he accidentally bumped her bandaged hand, causing her face to scrunch up like a steamed bun as she hissed in pain.
"You did that on purpose, didn't you, Sterling? I can't wear it, I can't take it off. What exactly do you want from me!"
Driven by the sharp sting of pain, tears welled up in the corners of Elena's eyes as she glared fiercely at him.
Sterling was momentarily struck speechless. Looking into her unapologetically direct gaze only made his chest feel more tangled.
Yeah, what exactly did he want?
It was just a bathrobe. Let her wear it. Who cared?
As for how many men's clothes she had worn in the past, what did that have to do with him?
She was an escort. He had known that from the very beginning. Hell, the whole reason he went to Midnight was to find someone like her to use as a stark contrast to the woman he actually loved!
Just as his thoughts spiraled, the girl's voice pulled him back. Her usual teasing smirk was gone, replaced by a rare, icy seriousness. "Sterling, I get it. You look down on what I do. You think I'm dirty, and you don't want me touching your things. I understand."
The young man snapped out of his daze, looking down into her eyes as she made a solemn promise.
"Don't worry. Unless you explicitly give me permission, I will never wear your clothes again!"
For some inexplicable reason, her absolute compliance did absolutely nothing to soothe the turbulent irritation in his chest.
He pressed his lips into a thin line, muttering a low denial. "That's not what I meant..."
"Whether you meant it or not doesn't matter."
Elena paused, then replied earnestly. "What matters is that wearing your clothes without asking was my mistake. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again."
Seeing her draw such a clear, impassable line between them, Sterling shot her a heated glare, his tone hard and cold. "As long as you know!"
The young man's mood was impossible to predict.
Elena let out an exasperated sigh, but then remembered the two hundred and ten thousand dollars sitting in her bank account.
Instantly, a bright smile returned to her face, her tone dripping with professional sincerity. "Sterling, you're officially my boss now. If I ever do anything that's not up to your standards, or if you're unhappy with anything, just tell me directly."
She paused for a second before adding, "After all, I don't know you that well yet. I can't read your mind every single time."
Hearing her logic, Sterling felt a suffocating tightness in his chest. Everything about this felt wrong.
"You—"
He glared at her, desperate to say something to shut her down.
"Hm?"
The girl blinked up at him, her expression a portrait of perfect, expectant innocence.
Meanwhile, crystal droplets of water clung to the tips of her damp hair.
Every so often, a droplet would hit the floor, sending a tiny ripple through the tense silence of the room.
"Sit down. I'll dry your hair."
Suddenly, Sterling closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he completely changed the subject.
