Elena took the uniform and turned toward her room, the suffocating tension finally leaving her chest.
Nadine glanced at Sterling and politely suggested, "Master Sterling, since Ms. Larkin injured her hand, would you like to go in and help her change?"
Before Sterling could even process the thought, Xavier scoffed, clicking his tongue in irritation. "The guest has an injured hand. What exactly are we paying you for?"
Nadine quickly lowered her head, completely bewildered by the sudden hostility.
She was only trying to be helpful! Master Sterling clearly adored Ms. Larkin, so surely he would jump at the chance to help her undress.
But Elena, already halfway through the door, poked her head back out, clutching the clothes to her chest. "Babe, I don't want Nadine. I want you to help me..."
The hand holding Xavier's cigarette froze mid-air, while Sterling shot her a sharp, warning glare.
"Please come help me, Babe. I can't do it by myself."
The girl batted her eyelashes at him, the picture of sweet innocence.
Sterling cleared his throat, hiding his discomfort. "Excuse us, Xavier. She can be incredibly childish sometimes. She just can't bear to be apart from me. I'll go give her a hand."
With that, he stepped into the room, his expression hardening the moment his back was turned.
Nadine watched as Master Sterling shut the door firmly behind him.
Just as she was about to excuse herself, a chilling, oppressive stare pinned her to the floor.
"Mr. Hawthorne, did you need—"
"Keep your mouth shut."
She looked up timidly, only to see him glaring daggers at her before snapping that single command.
Without another word, Xavier lit his cigarette and stalked downstairs, taking aggressive, angry drags.
Nadine was left standing in the hallway, wracking her brain trying to figure out what she had said wrong.
