Xavier cut Sterling off smoothly.
He asked it so casually, but it sent Elena into a suffocating spiral of panic.
She wasn't an idiot. She knew exactly what "thing" he was referring to.
He was talking about her.
But Sterling was just her employer. He didn't actually love her.
If Xavier revealed their past right here and now, she was entirely screwed.
Sterling would choose his brother's sanity over a fake girlfriend in a heartbeat and hand her over on a silver platter!
"What is it?"
Sterling asked, completely unsuspecting.
Elena's heart raced as she quickly threw her arms around Sterling's waist, burying her face into his bare chest.
"Sterls, what he just said about his ex is terrifying!"
Sterling stiffened. Her damp hair was cool against his skin.
But her cheek was incredibly warm, the contrast sending a distracting jolt of electricity straight to his brain.
"I'm talking to my brother. Behave."
He patted her back before gently peeling her off him.
"No! Sterls, I just think... what if his ex already moved on and has a new boyfriend? Isn't he crossing a line?"
She asked Sterling, but her words were a pointed warning to Xavier.
Xavier still thought their relationship was real.
If Xavier truly cared about his little brother's feelings, he wouldn't dare demand Sterling hand over the woman he supposedly loved.
She wanted to test him. Was this bastard entirely selfish, or did he actually possess a shred of humanity when it came to his own flesh and blood?
Sterling immediately clamped his hand over her mouth.
"Shh. Shut up. Not another word."
He hissed, completely appalled by her suicidal audacity.
