Sylvie couldn't believe her ears.
"Manager Moon, are you saying I get an advance on next month's paycheck on my very first day, only have to work two hours a shift, and get weekends off?"
Penelope's smile was warm and professional.
"That's right, Miss Vance. Our benefits have always been excellent."
"Wow," Sylvie marveled. "No wonder your standards are so high."
She felt even more confident that asking Caspian for help had been the right move.
"We do have high expectations," Penelope agreed. "But aside from your education, you meet all of our requirements. Your stunning appearance is a massive bonus."
That last part was completely genuine.
Sylvie possessed the kind of face that instantly drew people in.
Radiant, adorable, and completely non-threatening, always accompanied by a bright smile.
She looked like the kind of girl who would make a naturally sweet iced Americano.
"Here's your uniform. Go ahead and change, and then I'll show you around the shop."
Sylvie took the outfit and headed into the back room.
It was a slow hour, and two baristas were whispering behind the counter.
"Who does she think she is? We went through rounds of interviews and training, and she just strolls right in? Is she some heiress?"
"An heiress working at a coffee shop? Get real."
"True."
"She doesn't look rich. Probably hooked up with one of the rich boys at Griffin and got placed here so they could play house."
"She is exactly their type. Looks sweet and innocent, but probably more calculating than anyone."
"Doesn't matter how calculating she is. Those trust-fund guys are just playing around. When it comes time to settle down, they'll marry someone from their own social circle."
...
Sylvie didn't hear a word of their gossip.
Her attention was entirely focused on her new clothes.
The Echo uniform didn't feel like workwear at all. It was more like a minimalist, haute-couture dress.
It was a pale apricot color, impeccably tailored, and made of high-quality fabric. Instead of that harsh, factory-new smell, it carried a light, refreshing scent.
