His smile twitched. “You’re very attached to her.”
“Enough to break into a house surrounded by armed police.”
“Apparently.”
“Enough to die for her?”
Landon moved. “Mercer…”
“Quiet!”
The gun jerked away from Astra for half a second as Silas snapped it toward my father.
My body moved before thought could catch it.
One step.
Two.
Silas saw me coming and the gun immediately whipped back toward Astra.
Too late.
1 hit him full-force.
My shoulder drove straight into his chest, ripping him clean away from the chair. The gun went off with a deafening crack that punched through the room. Astra’s scream tore after it.

My ears rang so hard the world went distant and underwater, but I didn’t stop to check where the bullet had gone.
I didn’t fucking care.
Silas crashed into the desk and I went with him, one hand already locked around his wrist before he could swing the weapon back around.
I slammed his hand against the edge of the desk. His grip faltered. I did it again and this time the gun dropped. I kicked it across the room before he could reach for it.
Silas swung and his fist caught me across the mouth, splitting my lip against my teeth. I tasted blood.
I looked back at him and smiled.
The confidence disappeared from his face.
Now he understood.
“You kidnapped the wrong fucking girl.”
I drove my fist into his face, catching him across the mouth and sending blood spraying from his lips.
He stumbled backward, but I didn’t give him room to recover.
I grabbed a fistful of his sweater and drove him into the wall.
