The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 10

"...Fine, it's not a total loss. With that face and body, sleeping with him is a win for you. Are you happy now?"

"No," Clara said. "He's taking me to his family's house for dinner tonight."

Simon fell even more silent.

Clara knew why.

Veronica, Rhys' mother, didn't like her.

Although Rhys was just a traffic police captain, his family was actually wealthy.

The Huntingtons were in business and were considered a prominent family in Brighton City. However, Rhys's father insisted on being a police officer. The family couldn't stop him, so they let him be.

His mother, Veronica West, had a marriage of convenience with his father. They didn't love each other.

When Rhys was very young, his father died in the line of duty. Not long after, Veronica took the shares and pension the Huntingtons gave her and remarried in style.

But she didn't take Rhys.

Little Rhys was left with the Huntingtons. But there were other children in the house. As an "orphan" with no parents, naturally, he didn't receive much genuine affection in that kind of wealthy household.

Aside from living expenses deposited regularly into a card, only the nanny managed his food and clothing.

After Rhys grew up, although the family pressured him out of becoming a detective, he still followed in his father's footsteps.

Regarding this son, Veronica didn't really care. She would only fulfill her maternal duties occasionally when she remembered him, or during holidays in front of media reporters.

She would take him in,snap a few photos of a happy, devoted family, and then give him more money.

The first time Clara met Veronica West was before their engagement.

The wealthy lady invited her to afternoon tea and looked her up and down.

"What does Miss Bridges' family do?"

"Rhys, this child, has been stubborn since he was small, and his personality is cold. I don't know who he takes after. When you're together, you'll have to bear with him."

"His job is special, he can't take care of the home. You need to be mentally prepared for that."

Clara nodded and agreed verbally, but in her mind, she was rolling her eyes to the heavens.

Later, when they got married, Veronica only showed up at the wedding with her politician husband for a brief appearance, acting like a guest. She didn't even let Clara make a toast or properly introduce herself as the new daughter-in-law.

Every Christmas, besides taking her to the Huntingtons, Rhys would also take her to visit Veronica.

Veronica was always cold and distant toward her.

On the contrary, the daughter brought by her second husband, Margot, was as close to her as a real daughter.

Once, Veronica seemingly lost her mind and, in front of a room full of relatives, held Margot's hand and said, "Margot is the classy one. Some girls these days hang out with shady people all day long."
