The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 110

Seawater surged from all directions, pouring into her ears and nose. She tried to paddle, to surface, but water weeds were wrapped tight around her ankles.

Through the shimmering surface, she saw a white boat above her. Rhys was standing at the edge.

She opened her mouth to cry for help, stretching her hand out of the water with all her might. Rhys saw her. He crouched down to pull her up.

Joy surged in Clara's heart. But just as she was about to touch him, a figure stumbled out of the cabin. Margot, clutching her chest, face pale, collapsed toward Rhys.

"Rhys, I don't feel well..."

The hand that had been reaching for Clara changed direction in mid-air, catching the falling Margot instead.

"Don't be afraid. I'm here."

His voice transmitted through the water, so gentle it broke her heart.

He picked Margot up, turned, and walked into the cabin, never once looking back at the woman in the water.

The white speedboat cut through the waves, becoming a smaller and smaller black dot in her vision. The weeds around her ankles tightened, dragging her down into the pitch-black depths.

"Rhys!"

Clara bolted upright, forehead drenched in cold sweat, gasping for air.

Outside the window, the sky wasn't yet bright. A strange ceiling. A strange wardrobe. No ocean, no speedboat, and no man who had abandoned her. Just her, alone.

She grabbed the phone from the nightstand.

3:00 AM.

He was probably asleep. Maybe he was angry he couldn't find her, thinking she was being unreasonable. Or maybe he was video-chatting someone to sleep, having long forgotten his disobedient wife.

Clara hugged her knees, burying her face in her arms. Didn't he say dreams were the opposite of reality? Why did hers feel so real?
