The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 123

Inside the observation room, Simon's eyes were still red. He looked at Clara lying on the bed, and for once, he couldn't come up with a single witty remark.

Finally, he walked over, pulled up a round stool, sat down, and pressed his face into the palm of Clara's uninjured hand.

"You scared me..."

He mumbled against her skin, "If you had actually died, I would have haunted that bastard Rhys as a ghost."

Clara pulled her hand back and patted his head gently. "I'm still here, aren't I?"

"Only because you're stubborn," Emily huffed from the corner. She poured a glass of water and handed it over, her tone awkward. "Here, drink this. Don't die of thirst on me now; who would I show off my new limited-edition bag to?"

"Thanks."

Clara took the cup and took a small sip.

"Hey," Emily glanced pointedly at Clara's abdomen. "Are you really not going to tell him?"

Simon lifted his head, tears still staining his face, looking confused. "Tell him what? Tell who?"

Clara looked at Emily.

Emily rolled her eyes. "You idiot. The baby is still there."

"Holy sh*t!" Simon nearly jumped off the stool. "You didn't lose it? Then you..."

"Shh!" Clara quickly covered his mouth. "Keep your voice down. He might still be outside."

Simon's eyes went wide. He pulled Clara's hand away and whispered excitedly into her ear, "That's badass, Clara. When this kid is born, it's ours. It won't have anything to do with the Huntington family!"

"Don't celebrate too early." Clara gave a bitter smile, her gaze dimming. "The doctor said it's a threatened miscarriage. The situation is very unstable. At any moment, I could still..."

"Don't jinx it!"

Simon practically spat the words out, clasping his hands together and praying to the ceiling. "My godson or goddaughter is going to have a long, lucky life. They have to inherit my social media empire one day!"

The atmosphere in the room finally lightened.

Emily watched the two of them, feeling a sour twinge of jealousy mixed with admiration. She used to think Clara was fake, but now she realized that having friends who stood by you no matter what was a talent in itself.

"Alright, stop dreaming," Emily said, taking on the role of the pragmatist. "What's the plan? You can't stay in the ER forever. As long as Rhys's brain hasn't completely atrophied, he'll check your medical records soon."

Clara fell silent.

Emily was right. Trying to save the pregnancy under Rhys's nose while pretending to have had a miscarriage was too difficult. She had to divorce him before he found out.

"I need to transfer," Clara said decisively. "To a private hospital. I can't let Rhys access my files."
