Rhys's grip slackened; the thermos in his hand nearly crashed to the floor.
"Where did she go?"
"How should I know? I'm not the police." The cleaning lady pushed her cart past him, unbothered.
Brows knitted tight, Rhys turned on his heel and strode to the nurse's station.
The nurse flipped through the clipboard on the counter. "Clara Huntington, right? She was discharged yesterday. The paperwork is all done."
Rhys suppressed the rising flare of anger. "That's ridiculous! How could she be discharged in her condition? What doctor authorized this?"
The nurse, already irritated by the morning shift, wasn't in the mood to be lectured, no matter how handsome the man was. "The patient requested it herself. The family signed an AMA—Against Medical Advice—liability waiver. We just followed protocol."
"What family? I'm her husband. I didn't sign anything!"
The nurse frowned, looking him up and down. "You're the husband? Then where were you during the emergency yesterday?"
She snapped the file shut. "The two men who signed for her looked a hell of a lot more worried than you do right now."
A vein pulsed violently at Rhys's temple.
Simon. And that Noah Carter again.
Taking her out of the hospital when she was at her weakest? Was she simply disregarding her own health, or did she think pulling a stunt like this would make him panic?
It was utterly unreasonable.
Rhys cursed under his breath and pulled out his phone to call Simon. The call failed instantly—he'd been blocked.
He tried the number Emily had used yesterday. Same result.
He checked the hospital roster for Pediatrics, only to find that Noah was on leave today.
Good.
Excellent.
They were all conspiring to make him look like a fool. While he was racking his brain trying to figure out how to make amends and take care of her, she had fled into the night under the cover of her circle of friends.
Face cold, Rhys turned and walked away.
Passing a trash can in the lobby, he let go of the handle. The thermos, along with the soup inside, disappeared into the bin.
