"Do you even hear what you're saying? That is your wife! She miscarried, and instead of reflecting on how you failed to take care of her, you're blaming her for being careless?"
"That is the fact."
"The fact is you left her alone! If you had been by her side, would she have had an accident?"
Rhys was irritated and didn't want to explain the details.
"Enough. I don't want to discuss this; it just makes me angry." Mia took a breath to calm herself. "I'm calling Clara. Which hospital is she in? I'm going to see her."
Rhys hesitated. "She checked out."
Mia really panicked now.
"Discharged? She just miscarried and she's discharged? Rhys, are you trying to destroy this marriage completely?"
"She's hiding from me. I can't find her."
"You're a police officer and you can't find your own wife? I think you just don't want to find her!"
The call was disconnected.
Rhys held the phone, listening to the busy signal, his eyes downcast and unreadable.
It felt like everyone had decided this was all on him. As if he were the only unforgivable sinner.

Mercyvale Private Hospital.
Clara had just finished receiving a hormone injection to support the pregnancy. Simon had gone out to buy lunch when the phone by her pillow rang.
Clara glanced at it, her eyelashes trembling.
In this marriage, if there was anything she still felt attached to—aside from the fading remnants of love—it was this aunt who had always treated her like her own daughter.
She adjusted her breathing and pressed answer.
"Hello, Aunt Mia."
Hearing her answer, Mia finally relaxed a little.
"Clara, you've suffered. Why are you so silly? Something this big happens and you don't even tell your aunt?"
A lump formed in Clara's throat, and tears threatened to fall. She whispered, "I'm fine. It was just a minor procedure. I'll be okay with some rest."
