The car pulled up to the gates of the Johnson estate.

"We're here."

Rhys made no move to open his door.

Margot paused, looking back at him. "Rhys, aren't you coming in? Dad just texted saying he's waiting for you. That accident with Ladd was tricky to handle, and he wants to thank you in person."

"It's too late. Another time."

"Can't you just come in for ten minutes?"

"I said another time. We have a morning briefing at the station tomorrow; I need to go back and prep materials."

It was an excuse.

He knew the moment he walked through that door, he'd face Veronica West's lectures and Margot's needs.

He knew it, and Margot knew it too.

In the past, no matter how busy he was, one word from her and he would find the time.

The light in Margot's eyes faltered, her face falling.

"Rhys, is it that... you don't want to see Mom?"

Rhys didn't look at her. "No. Be careful going in. Get some rest."

Margot forced a smile. "Okay. Drive safe. And about Clara... don't worry too much. She'll come back once she's cooled off."

Rhys didn't reply.

Margot opened the door and stepped out.

It was freezing outside. She wrapped her coat tighter and stood on the steps, looking back.

The car windows were tinted dark; she couldn't see the expression of the man inside.

It wasn't until the black SUV turned around and drove off that she realized Rhys wasn't going to roll down the window to glance at her even once.

Margot composed her expression and turned to enter the house.

Rhys stared at them, then nudged one slipper out of place with the toe of his shoe. The soup stain had been cleaned by the hourly housekeeper, and the broken tureen was gone.
