Clara said, "We're having barbecue. Come or don't."
Emily was silent for two seconds. "Wait for me. Seven o'clock."
Hanging up, Clara casually sent a message to Noah as well.
At 6:50 PM.
Emily, wobbling up the stairs in sky-high heels, muttered creative curses with every step.
Panting as she reached the fourth floor, she raised her hand to knock, but the door opened from the inside.
Simon wore a fake smile. "Well, well, Miss Lane graces us with her presence. The humble abode is shining bright."
Emily rolled her eyes and shoved the items in her hand into his arms. "Cut the sarcasm. These are supplements someone gave my dad. We have no room at home, and I saw they were about to expire, so I brought them."
Simon glanced down at the date.
Manufactured last month.
"Right, right, practically expired. We'll help you dispose of this trash."
Emily fastidiously dusted off some gray smudges on her coat and stepped inside.
Although the apartment was old, it was kept clean. A disposable tablecloth covered the dining table, which was crowded with food.
Clara tried to stand up, but Emily pushed her back onto the sofa with one finger.
"Stay seated. Don't go hurting the baby again."
As soon as the words left her mouth, the air in the room froze for a second.
Knowing she had slipped up, Emily turned her head away awkwardly. "What are you looking at? Is there something on my face?"
"Not looking at anything." Clara's eyes curved into a smile. "Just thinking you've gotten prettier."
Emily couldn't be bothered to respond.
The three of them chatted idly for ten minutes before a knock sounded again.
When Noah walked in carrying a fruit basket, Emily was drinking water and nearly sprayed it out.
She watched as the man entered, changed his shoes, handed the fruit to Simon, and walked over to Clara, asking in a low voice, "How are you feeling today? Any discomfort?"
"I'm fine, just sleepy."
Emily looked at Simon, her eyes asking a silent question.
Simon shrugged.
