Rhys paused, then turned back to the railing. He unlocked the handcuffs, hauled the young man who was still lingering on the ground up by his collar, and dragged him toward the end of the corridor.

Behind the curtain, Clara switched off the voice changer in her hand and tossed it into her bag.

Simon had originally bought it as a toy and given her one. She had thrown it into her purse without a second thought, never expecting it to actually come in handy.

Noah pulled back the curtain and walked in, smiling helplessly.

As the car drove out of the hospital's underground garage, Noah glanced at her out of the corner of his eye while steering.

"Scared?"

Clara shook her head. "I actually find it a bit funny."

"What's funny?"

"He suspected it was me, yet he couldn't recognize me."

Before, when she shared his bed, he looked right through her. Now that she was about to become his ex-wife, he was searching the world for her shadow.

Just moments ago outside the ultrasound room, he had stood less than two meters away from her. If he had persisted just a little longer, she wouldn't have been able to hide.

"You can't blame him," Noah said. "The surgery record is evidence, and common sense provides the logic. Both told him that you couldn't possibly be pregnant."

Clara turned to look at him. "And?"

"And so he didn't dare to dig deeper. He'd rather believe it was a misunderstanding. Because if that person really was you, it would mean you lied to him—that you're divorcing him while carrying his child, preferring to be a single mother rather than stay with him."

"I guess he wouldn't want to believe that outcome. Mistaking you for someone else is actually a relief for him."

Clara fell silent for a moment, then let out a long breath.

"Dr. Carter, did you minor in psychology or something?"
