It started snowing again outside, the cold wind drove fine flakes straight into her face.
Clara had just called a car on her phone; it showed a wait of seven or eight minutes.
A police cruiser drove past her, then suddenly reversed and stopped next to her.
The window rolled down to reveal a young, smiling face.
"Mrs. Huntington! What a coincidence!"
Clara saw Jason and nodded.
Jason leaned out from the passenger seat, looking concerned. "Mrs. Huntington, where are you headed? Where's Captain Huntington?"
Captain Huntington?
He didn't go to the precinct today?
But it was Saturday; he should be on duty.
Clara frowned, but she replied coolly, "He's busy."
Jason scratched his head, looking earnest. "Oh, right. Captain Huntington put in for leave early this morning for two days. Is there a family emergency?"
Clara froze.
Since she left Veronica West's house last night, he hadn't made a single phone call.
Taking two days off specifically...
She didn't need a brain to figure it out.
Margot fainted last night; could he be at ease?
He was probably at the hospital right now, waiting on her hand and foot, playing the perfect step brother.
In the past, when she had a high fever and was burning up alone at home, she had called him in a daze. He said he was working a case and couldn't leave.
So she dragged herself to urgent care, waited in line, and got her shots alone.
Seeing her temperature was 103, even the nurse was scared and immediately hooked her up to an IV.
A room full of people, everyone had someone with them. She was the only one alone.
She had thought she was so tough, so independent.
If she didn't value her own face, Clara would have wanted to slap herself again.
